Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tyre Advice

Hi looking for some advice on new tyres for our 2010 Passat Wagon (Diesel). We are going to be doing a very high mileage around Australia (on Bitumen, very little Off road). I am looking for a tyre that is relatively quiet but gives good mileage, and handles well. Can anyone help, I'm based in Melbourne at present.

    Hi raygc,

Lots of threads on this topic.

I have the OE Continental Contisport 5 and they are excellent. I have also used Michelin PS3 and Bridgestone Adrenalin RE003 on other cars. All are good. Conti>PS3>RE003 for quietness and the order of what I would buy pricing be equal.

Many thanks gives me something to look at, have used Continentals before on another Euro car and was happy with them.

I just got Michellin Primacy 3 ST's put on replacing another set of Michellin Primacy 3 ST.

Great tyre, excellent performance in all conditions, good wearing (got 70,000k from last set, mostly open road driving, and would have done better with more sensible rotation) and they are the quietest tyres I've ever owned by a long way (the ST stands for Silent Tune).

Typically around $220/corner. If you are a costco member you can get them there for about $180/corner typically.

I agree with ozrcboy re the Primacy 3 ST.
Good wearing, quiet tyre, although not quite as grippy as the Continentals that were fitted ex factory.
Shopping around a couple of weeks ago, Tyres Plus in Ringwood had them for $145 each (235/45/17) fitted and balanced.
