Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • R36: front resonator delete instead of suitcase delete

    Hi

If i am not mistaken, there are a pair of resonators on each pipe just after the cats

Has anyone deleted these instead of the suitcase resonator/mid muffler

Heard there are drone issues on the suitcase, but was wondering whether it would be better deleting the front resonators. Not keen on spending $3k on an exhaust that will offer little to no performance gain but do want some additional throatiness and volume on the exhaust

This person did the mod, but its not on a R36, but a 3.6L earlier year Passat VR6

Assuming here it will be similar, but perhaps not since this car only has a single muffler and not dual

Probably not many people tried this. However it is not too expensive to do. You can always put them back for little money. Let us know how it sounds if you go ahead.

Would have thought someone had trialled with mod on a 36... But with this vid, as mentioned dannyjak, single exhaust & also no DSG (by the sounds of it) which would also make a big diff on the gear change crack/pop... Little unsure on drone though, particularly on a wagon. Dannyjak have you priced what it would cost to setup & change back if undesired?

Probably because everyone goes for the suitcase first. It should be a decent mod considering the suitcase and rear mufflers
do most of the job to cut drone.

$130 from a local to cut n weld straight pipes. Making it reversible witj flanges is not economical i think

I am one of the ones who attempted the suitcase delete and reverted back due to drone issues.

I'm really curious how this mod could turn out, as I'd hope that leaving the "suitcase" would leave drone to a minimum.

I found this thread which also has some videos, but none with just the resonators after the cats removed.

I would have tried it straight away, but the R36 will be the wife's daily with the arrival of bub #3. So it'll be a while before I can try it.

Hey dannyjak, now it looks like you've decided to scour alternate exhaust options with your other thread, has this idea been put to rest or will you give it a look in before finalising any new purchase order o/s?

Not put to rest quite yet. New exhaust is still an expensive option so may still do this
