  • Clear coat peeling on my B6..

The bonnet of my '08 Passat is starting to look a little worse for ware. About 12 months ago I noticed a few small "bubbles" developing under the clear coat and it seems to be spreading over one half of the bonnet!
Couple that with the fifty thousand stone chips (I drive 35k per year on the highway) and its a depressing sight.
I guess the car is hardly new, but I must admit to being surprised by it nonetheless.. Anyone else had a similar issue?

This was the first imperfection I noticed, but it hasn't got any worse over the last few years so gave me no reason to worry. Until now..

We used get a few of them with poor paint adhesion on the plastics.

Have not seen clear coat peeling on that era of VW. I think given the age, it'd be fair to chalk it up to wear and tear.

Yeah true. Perhaps it's the black paint attracting more heat causing it to deteriorate quickly... Under the harsh Tasmanian sun and all that [emoji6] hehe

I might look into getting at least the bonnet resprayed, but then I still have the problem of stone chips. I'm not a fan of bonnet "protectors"

I had a MY06 Subaru Liberty (black) which had spent much of it's life near the ocean and I started to notice the same thing happening just prior to me selling it early this year. Funnily enough in the same places as your images show, bonnet and across the tops of the doors just below the window plastics, once it started and air and moisture got under the small bubble it was all over and travelled quickly, I ended up respraying the bonnet prior to sale. I chalked it up to age and the sea air. As soon as I picked up my R36 (also black) I had it paint prepped and Opticoat Pro applied to hopefully stop this from happening again.

Sorry to say but, it happens to a lot of paint protection. Unless you had a choice I would never use the stuff.

Ah perhaps it is the sea air! My commute includes about 25km of highway that snakes along the coast. My washer fluid is always empty from clearing the sea spray. Still, I wash my car once or twice every week in an effort to lessen the effect of the salty devil.
