So this was a pretty long time ago, but I've just had to have my mechatronics unit replaced. Mine was only a slight shudder that i probably could have lived with, but got it checked out for piece of mind.

VW Australia covered 100% of parts and 70% of labour. Then my dealer warranty covered the rest. So I would say getting shudders checked out is a good idea, before anything worse comes of it. And with everything VW is going through with emissions, I'd say they're trying to keep customers as happy as they can, any way they can right now.

My 010 Passat 1.8t is doing that, it started with a slight shudder and it got so bad you could not drive it. The dealer had it towed to his yard and he had it checked out.[by ultra tune] He said it needed a gearbox oil and filter changed not covered by warranty, but it is still doing it. Can I get a scan done on the gearbox to see if its a fault.

Your Passat will have the 7-speed dry clutch DSG - my money would be on the clutch pack, especially if the shudder occurs during partial clutch engagement (ie when taking off, or shifting).

Is it fixable, and is it hard to do

It's fixable with a new clutch pack - and assuming you don't abuse the gearbox, it's likely to be a permanent fix. As I understand it, VW redesigned the clutch pack a few years ago so it's now much more robust than the earlier ones. It's a fairly complex and lengthy job though, as far as I know.

Might sound strange but I was experiencing something similar with my R36. Checked the tyre pressures and they were all within spec but added 10kpa and it is much improved.
