  • 2006 Passat 4motion wagon - what's it worth if wrecked?

Unfortunately it looks like my Passat wagon is no good to me anymore as it's not looking viable for me to get the necessary repairs needed to get it up and running again. I'm considering selling it as a complete car for someone to salvage whatever parts off it they want/repair it themselves and get it running if they know what they're doing, but I've got no idea what it would be worth.

Car was bought for about $17,000 about a year ago and I've spent an additional $9,000 on the car in the past 12 months due to unforeseen major problems arising. I know I'm not going to come out of this with spare money in my pocket, but I need to cut my losses somewhere! I just want to make sure that what I get for it is a fair price so I'm keen to find out if anyone knows the approx value of the car in its current state?

Bit of info about the car...
    2006 Passat wagon
    3.2L V6 FSi 4motion
    Done about 105,000km
    DSG transmission
    Leather seats
All electrics working (windows, mirrors, driver's seat adjustment, heated seats, electronic park brake, cruise control, dials, gauges etc)
    Metallic silver

The current issue is something to do with rear diff/haldex assembly. It has a brand new Haldex Control Unit fitted to it which cost me $3,000 only the other day, but unfortunately this on its own didn't fix the problem so there's likely more damage inside the diff/haldex.

The car currently drives, but sounds pretty bad due to the grinding/clunking coming from the diff area.

    Thoughts anyone?

Hey there, man what a bummer!! Have you looked around for a used diff assembly? If you could pick one up for under $3k fitted it may be worth hanging on to it for a bit longer to try and get some of your money's worth whilst driving it?

I'd be scared to estimate what you'd get for it as it is, but I'm sure the figure will be very disappointing... Mate I feel your pain here, I hope you can salvage some value in it yet.

    Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the message. I did actually have a used diff assembly lined up for about $3000, but it turns out that the transfer case in the transmission is also damaged - and that means a new transmission too, so that's put it into the 'not worth fixing' category now.

I imagine the only major thing anyone would want out of the car would be the 3.2L engine. Any ideas what these go for new and used so I can figure out what I could get for this?

Sounds like a run of bad luck.
Have you had a second opinion & or have considered reconditioned or second hand components.
These days its possible to buy after market repair kits for the mechatronic unit that deprived VW of many$$$

          Hi mmatear,

I'm sorry to hear your dramas have escalated. I was hoping you'd find the parts from a wrecker that would have let you get the car back on the road for a cost less than it's worth. Maybe don't give up yet?

I just posted the following reply on your original newbie post. "One week after getting my car back from the throttle body repair, it's off the road again with another expensive $4,000 repair. This time the 3.2L VR6 needs new timing chains (stretched), sprockets, tensioner etc. A lot of labour involved because VW in their wisdom placed the timing chains on the transmission side of the engine. Now ... if we combined our two cars, we'd have one that worked!"

I haven't had my car since late December. It's sad but I'm coming to the conclusion that early B6 owners need to own 2 B6 Passats - one to drive while the other one is being repaired!

            RIP Passat!

I've given up on the old Passat. Couldn't be arsed stuffing around with it any longer so I cut my losses and sold it off as a wreck. Need a car for work so I just couldn't wait any longer. Lost a sh*t load of money in the whole process, but I just don't care anymore. Just a relief that it's gone!

Managed to get the dealer who tried to 'service' it to admit that they got the diagnosis completely wrong, but it still turned out that there was major problems - but it was actually the transmission. Found a really good VW specialist in Perth for a second opinion and he was appalled at what the dealer had done. Waiting for a refund cheque in the mail for the 'service' the dealer provided.

Looking to buy my first ever new car now! Test drove Octavia RS, Megane GT 220, Mazda 6 Touring and Hyundai i40 Premium yesterday. Still weighing them all up. My other half loved the Megane, while I love Skoda (although the service we got from the salesperson was less than ordinary so that put a bit of a downer on that experience). The Mazda was really high quality and the Hyundai had ALL the bells and whistles, but they both drive like buses. No get up and go so I'm not sure we'll go down that path.

Anybody got any thoughts on the options I'm looking at?

Sorry to hear the sad story of the Passat

If you're looking at that price range I suggest taking a look at the mew MY15 Subaru Liberty... just not sure what the wait times are going to be like. I was looking around at similar vehicles recently and have ordered the base model 2.5i which is coming mid-March.
