  • B6 R36 Passat - Dynaudio Retrofit

Here are some details for anyone who is interested in retro-fitting a Dynaudio system into an R36 Passat.

I ordered a 10-speakers + amp Dynaudio sytem from a wrecked 2010 R36 Wagon. The plan is to retro-fit these into my 2008 R36 Sedan, replacing the stock 10-speaker, 250W system.

Here's a photo of the components that arrived this morning:

    Part numbers are:

    Amplifier - 3C0 035 346 J - Lear brand, 10-channel, 600W
    Front Tweeters - 3C0 035 411 D (81310) - 6 Ω, approx ?2 inch, ??W
    Front Bass+Mid - 3C0 035 454 B (85771/T85770) - 8Ω (both wired to 4 pin plug), Bass: approx 7 inch/??W, Mid: approx 3.25 inch/??W
    Rear Tweeters - 3C0 035 411 E (81180) - 4Ω, approx ?1.5 inch, ??W
    Rear Bass - 3C0 035 453 B (84899) - 8Ω, approx 5.75 inch, ??W
Note: I measured the speakers baskets (not cones), left/right part#'s are identical

(will post more specs as they become available) - if anyone can help with details like speaker ratings (??W), crossover frequencies (X-Y Hz) etc, that would be greatly appreciated (thanks).

I'll post some photos of individual components later and details of how the install goes. AFAIK - the amp and speakers are plug and play replacements for the standard system using existing wiring (we'll see if this assumption is correct soon).

BTW - I was investigating if it was possible to use the speakers from an Eos system (also 10 speakers from the "Confidence" package) when these became available. My thinking is that if they're the same size/impedance/power rating, then they should at least be compatible - my assumption is also that the Passat-specific 'tuning' would be done digitally by the amp (and not by changing the characteristics of the speakers somehow).

    Congrats on the purchase!
Is the donor car 2010 Sliver R36 from the wrecker exoticarsparts? How much did you pay if you dont mind.

Good luck with the plug and play, but I saw Dynaudio kit comes with wiring cables.

      You picked it!

It was $1500 ($350 amp, $1150 speakers). They originally said no to splitting up the system from the door trims around a month ago, but changed their mind recently.

Thanks, I may need some help with the amp and/or coding (do you have access to VCDS?).

I've been looking into having the speakers installed by an audio shop and having some sound deadening done at the same time. Another option may be a mobile installer if there's anyone worth recommending in Brisbane (I'm located at Carina).

I'm a little reluctant to try pulling the doors apart myself, though there's a lot of money to be saved by DIY...

So, it looks like the door trim is relatively easy to remove. The door frame looks far more difficult - required to also deaden the door skin from road noise...

            VWVortex.com - DIY-Speaker Replacement, and Dynamat Install
VWVortex.com - Step by step Passat B6 door sound proofing

AFAIK, replacing the door speakers require drilling out the rivets on the old speakers (with a vacuum to suck up the metal shavings), removing them, plugging in the new ones and then fixing them to the door (new rivets?).

.. I'm tempted to give it a go. The money saved would almost cover stage 2 - sub, amp and custom box.

The 'J' amplifier was plug in play, as well as all the speakers. It's been a long day fitting in a door here and there between other commitments, but all just plugged in and worked (no wiring, cutting etc - just rivet-drilling).

I'll post a bunch of photos and howtos for each stage of the install when I have done time (probably Monday).

                        Hi

Of all the upgrades that I've done to my car, this is one I enjoy the most. The clarity and overall sound quality is sensational. I'm retro fitting the same system and I've just got the new BT 9W7 module to install and then the Dynaudio amp which arrives next week!

Then I noticed the TV tuner can also be installed, but at $900.00 I'm not sure its worth it.

Yesterday I bought the new RNS510 R unit as mine was one of the first unit made - its a 2009 model. So that'll make a difference too.

So, even with the standard 250w amp that I'm using now, its still a fantastic sounding system. You won't win any "doofdoofdoof" loudness competition, its not that sort of kit, Dynaudio systems are more about clarity, low distortion and quality sound, and this they do very well!

And BTW, you got your kit at an excellent price!

And lastly, would you be able to pas on to me the part number/s for your rear tweeters? I have a set, but they don't fit... mine are incorporated in the handle like your are, but I don't have the part numbers to order a new set.

                        Thanks, and enjoy!

It sounds great. Very clear highs/mids and the bass is tighter and more exact - the 1.5m2 of Dynamat Extreme and 2x DynaXorb deflectors I used would also be adding to that.

The amp made a big difference, though the standard speakers had trouble handling all the extra power. The Dynaudio speakers provide better sound, though it's more of an incremental improvement - not proportional to $$ spent. Personally, I would still upgrade both amp and speakers if I were to start again.

The 250W system was still really good and all the speakers turned out to be Blaupunkt (quite respectable). I think the old system had a little more 'doof', but that is probably because the bass is less controlled (more muddy). I plan to add a sub to add some extra 'doof' anyway - thinking of a (removable) custom fibreglass box that fills the spare wheel and spills out into the extra volume opposite the tire removal tookit. Then then have a 10" or 12" mounted within the enclosure under a false floor, covered in OEM carpet =)

                          Sure, the rear dynaudio tweeters are: 3C0 035 411 E (81180) - 4Ω

I replaced the entire rear handle assembly as the tweeters are melted in - and are larger than the Blaupunkt equivalents (part# 3C0 035 411 A):

Do you know how to remove the rear interior handles? The door handles are a bit of a pain to pop out (requires some co-ordination) - I can provide details/photos on how to remove them if you like? Just make sure to do it on a soft surface (carpet, cardboard, your legs).. don't do what I did with the first one and scratch some of the leather on the concrete/pavers (at least it was minor and I should be able to restore it).

... more photos and details to come.

Yeah, it'd be good to catch up sometime to do a side-by-side comparison (use same track, tone settings etc).

BTW - does anyone have access to VCDS in Brisbane? The next step is to code the RNS-510 to use the Dynaudio setting.
Not sure if I'm going to replace the speaker grills. They are available online from China, but are melted into the door panels and will require some surgery to replace =S

Does one have to remove the passengers seat to fit the amp?

Is there much real estate under there? Do you reckon I'd be able to fit the TV tuner under there as well?

I've seen the Dynaudio stickers/labels on eBay somewhere I think... bugger changing the grills!
