  • Spare tyre on Alltrack ?

    Hi Guys

Does anyone know what the spare tyre is on the new Alltrack? I'm hoping its not a reduced speed model and most importantly that the when well will take my flat full size tyre ?

I have having troubles with space savers on my Touareg and Tiguan but would like to stay with VW if possible.

      Hi Hillbilly

Thanks for that link, good detailed review. I will double check with my local dealer, but so long as I have somewhere to put the full size flat I will be happy. Otherwise the Alltrack looks great and after 6 different SUVs I am ready for a change.

At least its got a bit of grunt I had a Tiguan 103 for a loaner and thought it was a slug after the Passat.

Wouldn't take either off road in the true sense though.

          Hey Hillbilly

I agree with the Tiguan 103, but its the wife's and she doesn't need more power, although she had a Golf TDI before the Tig and wants another one next.

Does the engine stop start function on the Passat annoy you? I haven't had a vehicle with it yet; a mate with a Merc says it took him a week but now he doesn't even notice it. Do you know if you can get it disabled?

No it doesn't bother me at all Have learnt how to use it and how to apply brake hard enough to stop but not hard enough to stop engine.

No you cant permanently disable it you can turn it off at the start of a trip but it resets after car is turned off as default is ON

Mine being an early adopter of it doesn't keep the engine off if you use Auto Hold and take your foot off the brake.

I never use that anyway as its pretty flat where I live.

I downloaded the latest Alltrack brochure from VGA and it says:
              17x7" with 225/50/R17 mobility tyres.
Spare is 16' with 215/55/R16 tyre (Please note: the spare wheel and tyre is speed restricted)

If you are listening VGA, try driving for an hour on a major highway in or out of any of our major cities with your cruise control set to 80!

So I guess I still have a problem with the Alltrack and a flat tyre. I will still go and check with my dealer this week and see if there is a work around.

Technically you should have exactly the same wheel/tyre combo on all 4 wheels. At least with the Alltrack the spare space is almost identical (width-wise) as the stock 17x7. I imagine the spare is 16x6.5(??) as it's running a slightly narrower tyre (215vs225). I don't know why they couldn't have matched everything up and taken off the speed restriction.

I agree seems a strange restriction. I will visit my helpful dealer this weeks and try to get a detailed answer. Ill post the result.

If either the wheel dimensions or the tyre size of the spare does not match those fitted on the vehicle's axle, vehicle manufacturers usually restrict the maximum speed to 80 km/h in order to preserve vehicle safety, dynamic integrity and mechanical reliability.

                          Spare tyre on Alltrack ?

So is it just the difference in rolling diameter that makes it limited to 80km/h?

Was cleaning my Alltrack today and popped the spare out to have a look.

As I'm researching A set of steel rims for off-road & winter use I wanted to see what the standard spare rim is.

                          Tyre is Pirelli Cinturato P7
                          215/55/16 97w

                          Nice tread

There a little bit of clearance around it, maybe 10- 20mm. You could always cut away some of the polystyrene under the jack kit to give a bit more clearance.

According to the tire comparator here the space saver has a 16mm smaller diameter so the thing to do would be jack the car up and take a wheel off and see if it fits in the hole. Logical thought. If it fits maybe go to the wreckers and see if you can buy a matching wheel
