R36 dsg whine

Hello Dubbers,

Before i start i have tried an extensive search on this website and others. As soon as you search for R36 DSG whine/problems you are bombarded with all types of info.

My dad just recently bought a R36. The DSG is making a very faint but noticeable whining sound under acceleration and deceleration.

Had a NRMA check today. The car scored a 9/10 but was noted about the whining sound as well. The situation we are in is the car is under 3 month new car warranty form date of purchase. Do any of you have some ideas what this might be and how to approach it as we want to make sure we take full use of this warranty before a major problem with the DSG if one will occur.

i would try and meet up with someone in your location with the same car just to confirm its not"normal" operation noise first.. there might be someone on here willing to help....

I would throw away the NRMA check and get a real specialist to look at it. The NRMA did an inspection of a previous car (Mazda MX5SP) I owned at the request of the buyer.

They might be good at Commodores and Camrys, but are way out of their depth with anything technical or out of the norm. The NRMA scored my car only 4 out of 10 for the engine and 5 out of 10 for the body - this was a Concours winning car that was widely regarded as one of the best examples about. When queried why they scored it so lowly, the quoted it had been fitted with an aftermarket turbo and exhaust

As far as the body work went, it scored lowly because of "high paint readings" on the bonnet (resprayed stone chips).

Would not change their report even when I showed the original invoice confirming it was an SP and magazine articles showing the factory turbo install; and receipts from the body shop showing the respray.

Hi mate I've just recently bought an R36 sedan with 31K on the clock and mine whines too. I'm taking it to a local VW specialist tomorrow to check that and a few other things before the warranty runs out. Will keep you advised.

Had the VW specialist listen to the whine this morning and he advised that it might not be anything serious however as mine still has warranty it would be worth getting A VW dealer to check it. He mentioned that if it was whining in all gears then it could be bearing related.

I'll get it into a dealer soon to get checked and will keep you posted.

I had what sounds like it might be the same or at least a similar problem earlier this year with my 2007 V6 Passat. At 32K (yes, the car has very low km's for a 2007 model - we don't drive it much) a whining noise started coming from the transmission. It was subtle. I took it to the VW dealer who does all of my servicing and the head of their service department test drove it. I had a call back later that day saying there was definitely a problem with the DSG. The car was well and truly out of warranty despite teh fact that it only had 32K on the odometer. A few days later they informed me that the transmission would be replaced at no cost to me, which to their credit it subsequently was. Note I am the first owner, I drive like a bank manager and I am meticulous in its maintenance. The car has a full VW service history. I must admit that having had this experience and then this week hearing all the media reports about DSG problems, I'm now somehwat nervous about the car.

We had the car at VW for 4 days and what did they end up fixing..... nothing. But they admited that there was a sound and they would look in to it. I believe they are trying to run out the 3 month warranty that comes with all 2nd hand cars purchased from dealers as any cost of repair is at the dealers expense.

On the 1st day of having the car they tried to spin my dad saying the car had bent the axels and wheels on the back and this was the cause of the whining. Thank god my dad is no dumb ass and called their bluff.

They said during the 4 days they had the car they got another r36 in and it had the same sound. So there is nothing to worry about.

What to do in this situation. Since we have lodged that there is a problem and it has been noted, can we claim on their warranty after the 3 months if a problems occurs?



No point in naming and shaming the dealer as VW is up **** creek with out a paddle atm.

That's a great news storey that one. Good on them for doing what is right.

i wouldn't worry about this media BS. A big part of the problem is that VW pulled their advertising from Fairfax, since then they have gone on a rampage against VW. and so far it's working.

FYI had it in at a VW dealer last week and it appears that my whine is normal! I'm going to see if can go for a spin in another R36 and clarify this. Will keep you posted.

You can do some checks to try and narrow it down.

All gearboxes will whine to some degree as the action of teeth against teeth will cause this. This is why gears have a helix angle to make the tooth engagement more progressive.

Does the whine happen on drive or overrun?

Does it happen to the same degree in all gears?

If you can find out which ratio is effectively straight through, see if the whine is present there as well.

These tests will try and narrow it down to a particular gear set or the differential gears.
