Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • R36 Wagon Skyline tail lights

Yes, another post on this subject….. Maybe a bit different.

I’m looking at this mod for my wagon and have sourced a spare set of inner taillights, and have been looking at modifying these myself.
I’ve also looked on Ali Express for some already done to save me time and messing about. All the ones I can see suit sedan, so the lights themselves are different.

So my question is - are the chrome inners that the LED’s sit in the same between sedan and wagon?
As in, can I buy a sedan set already modified from Ali, open up both sets and transfer the sedan inner to the wagon lights?
From what I have seen these chrome bezels mount with 3 screws to the red inner plastic of the tail lights.

Or if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me let me know. I also have some rings that I purchased that I will get around to installing one day if I can’t find a better option.
Or if anyone has some done ready to go, that would be awesome!

    Thanks!

    Mike.

    Hi,

I modified mine some years back, was a job... I can't comment on whether the chrome reflectors are interchangeable (that would have been good cost and production management by VW if so), but in any case, in my experience, the original inner tail-lights need to be disassembled to get to the reflectors.

Two options, cutting the red plastic housing around where the reflector is to get to it, or 'melting' the adhesive between the lens and the red base and removing the lens which also gives access to reflectors.

Then the reflectors need some work to adapt them to fit the LED rings.
