A/c Compressor replacement advice

Our B7 Passat Ac died last week. Car is 2013 with 78k on it.

Quoted 1480 at Vw to replace. Car is also in for broken washer system hose.

Reasonable price for the job?

I would be getting a quote from a local Auto Air Conditioning place .could just a leaking seal
if its only a broken washer hose you can repair that your self ,pull off the damaged one and go to an auto shop they all carry 6mil hoses ,

Diagnostic showed compressor according to VW, can they get a false read?

Also leaking hose is for rear washer and it’s in the head lining.

VW will only replace the AC unit with a new one , a AC specialist might repair yours might just need new seals , The rear washer might have to have the roof lining removed ,but how often do you use the rear washer ? might be cheaper just to wipe the window with a chamois

If the Ac has been working with out gas for some time the compressor may as well have been done for. Still getting a used compressor and regassed after resealed may be cheaper.

Yeah I went to the local auto electrician and AC guy he quoted off the top of his head between 1150-1400 depending on what was required. Car was already at VW and it’s a mission at the moment for me to do car swaps, so 1480 wasn’t bad.

I’m more concerned about this price.



Sunroof recently leaked during heavy rain in the same spot it had leaked before a few months after we bought the car used. Drains had never been cleaned before we bought it.

Now they cleaned them again at last service and said it was still leaking after cleaning and would require further investigation. Today was the day it was booked in for that check and the AC happened to go between last service 2 weeks ago and this booking.

Not sure how a rear washer leak would come through the passenger side vanity mirror?
