Here is how to change the gear oil. It's not a hard job or even time consuming. VW says it's filled for life & provides no service intervals. This is not the Mechatronics unit which is stand alone sealed unit.
Oil type: VW's own or these alternatives which meet the same specifications,
Fuchs Titan Sintofuild FESAE 75W or Liqui Moly Hochleistungs Getriebeol GL 4+ (GL4/GL5) SAE75 W-90
Volume: 1.8ltrs
Tools needed: 10mm allen key, funnel, 14mm tubing, container for oil (2 ltrs), gloves & a rag for clean up

Time: Allow to drain thoroughly prior to filling. I had lunch while it drained, about 1 hour. Actual physical work would be about 30 minutes.
Firstly locate the breather cap on the gearbox access plate where directly below the battery. Poke your arm between air intake, firewall & battery bend your wrist to the right & you should feel the round cap. Wipe around with your rag ensuring a clean surface. The cap just pulls off.

Ensure your car is on a flat level surface, locate the drain plug on the underside just behind where a join is toward the rear (underside). If looking from the passenger side it's just aft two bolts facing you in about the middle. Identifiable by a 10mm allen key plug. See pic.

Place your container directly under the drain plug, undo the plug in clockwise directly (it's not too tight, only 30nm). Allow oil to drain until no more drips.

Once drained, fit drain plug tightening to 30nm only.
Connect your hose to the base of the funnel. I dipped a hose end in hot water to soften. Fit the other end of the hose to breather on gearbox. It wiggles on easily enough. If necessary heat that end too.

Holding the funnel & hose up, slowly fill (gravity fill). It will spatter out occasionally as air passes through. Now remember 1.8 ltrs only!

Allow oil to fully drain from hose. Remove hose & replace cap.
Old & new oil. Do you believe your oil needs to be changed?

Done.
