  • Crap coming out the exhaust...

    Hey guys,

    I've got a 98 Passat Variant 1.8 Turbo.

Lately i've noticed that when the car is under heavy acceleration, ie. taking off from lights, or simply putting the foot to the floor, I have copious amounts of carbon crap coming out of my exhaust. When done at night, I can see the amount of stuff clearly in the car behinds headlights...

is this typical of turbo or is there something ultimately wrong?

    any help would be great.

    Cheers

Ah well from my rough guide from backyard mechanics..

        Blue = Oil burning ($problem)
White = Condensation burning away (no problem) or coolant burning ($problem)
Black = Running rich (not a big problem but something has obviously changed - Get someone to put it on the vagcom tool and have a look at diagnostics) If it's running overly rich it can glaze the bores ($problem) and destroy the cat (minor problem)

(Correct me if i'm wrong someone)

it could be that it is just running rich...

however recently I've become of a noticeable decrease in fuel efficiency which I'm not liking at all...

          wat is a vagcom?

my idle is doing funny things too... having to correct itself often.

diagnostic sounds like the way to go hey?

Hey mate sounds like your coolant temp sender has shat itself. This will tell the ECU the engine is still cooler and demands a longer injection pulse, thus the black smoke ( too much gas)

              thankyou!

that's exactly what I"ve been hearing around the traps.

not a hard fix or $$ is it?

we had this problem a lot with the newer vw's especially the passats. all that needs to be done is to clean the "gunk" (dirt) of the tops of the pistons and valve heads. this is done by using i just can't pick the right priduct but iuts similar to carby cleaner its works...i have seen al the crap that comes out of them.

Given that ur idle has become erratic at around the same time u noticed the increase in carbon, it may be due to a leak somewhere which allows air to escape...

With less air entering the engine but fuelling remaining the same, it should result in the car running rich and a lower FC as well as unstable idle....

The symtoms descibed is exactly what I have, higher fuel consumption, rough idle and black smoke under heavy acc.

I will be taking my car for a service and pink slip on friday. Let you know. Thanks for posting.

                      Interested to see the results.

I have this problem in terms of fuel consumption and erratic idle, normally when cold.

I notice that the car sounds airy around the inlet manifold, but cannot find a leak in any pipework !! Bizzare !

                      Runds sweet, pulls well !
