Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • B6 Wagon: Problem with courtesy light in the boot

A strange and frustrating problem with my 2008 B6 Wagon:

When I open the tailgate (I do not have auto-tailgate), the MFD always shows the status instantly so I believe the micro-switch in the latch is working properly. However, there can be a delay for the courtesy light in the boot to come on. Though sometimes it is instant on but often it is on after a fraction of a second, a couple of seconds or much longer to the point that I couldn't be bothered to wait any longer.

Any idea what may be the issue? Anywhere should I start checking?

I can tolerate if the delay is a short time, even for a couple of seconds... It's the situation where it stays off for a long time that bugs me... imagine it's dark and you try to make sure you pick up all the stuff from the boot...

Don't know what the issue might be but have you tried pulling the light unit out, unplugging it, even pulling the bulb out for an inspection. Maybe the connections might be in an ever so slight off centre position to cause some randomness. I know I had an issue with the upper LED stop light in my jetta a couple of years ago. All I did was unplugged the LED light itself at the top of the rear windscreen and then made sure that the plug was pushed back in properly and "clicked" back into place. Haven't had a problem since. Worth trying mate. While you've got it out, whack a canbus compatible COB LED or SMD LED globe in there. Makes all the difference.

The boot latch most likely has 2 switches in it. 1 is stuffed and the other works fine

It is certainly the switch. Someone suggested that grease may have get into the switch so it may just need some cleaning. Is the boot latch serviceable? I took the latch unit out but it is wrapped with plastic cover and I couldn't take it apart. Any suggestions?
