Check redbook and see what they're advertised on carsales will give you a reasonable idea.

If your car is DSG and you're trading it in, don't be shocked by low-ball figure they give you. Not many car yards are going to want to touch it. Whoever sells it as a used car will have to give 3 months warranty to the new buyer and it's a large risk for a car yard to have a DSG fail within the used car warranty period. You've got to assume they factor a new mechatronics unit into the cost of selling the car.

You won't get much more for the extras and I'd seriously consider taking off the tune before selling (or not advertising the fact that it's tuned). You have to look at the person who is likely to buy this car and having tune, CAI, mags is going to be a very small market on a Passat wagon (R36 would be a different matter).

Anyway 6 years old car with 86,000km is about average 15,000km a year.

My guess is you may be able to sell privately for $13-14k and the dealers would offer $8-9k as a trade-in. I've been through this recently with my own car and this is just being realistic.

Last month I was quoted $4,400(!) for a VW Passat B6 12/2006 with 85,000km as a trade-in by a Volkswagen dealer in Hurstville when I checked out their demonstrator Passat Alltrack which was advertised at $46,000. A Subaru dealer offered $7000 the same day.
I then went on to wash and vacuum the car and sold it privately on carsales for $12,000 to the first person that had a look at it. The car had full service history, no damage and one owner.
I'm just so happy now to finally got of the hook of the shonky VW dealerships I had to deal with. The $980 I had to pay for a failed Xenon bulb replacement which can only be done by VW and is obviously necessary for a green slip will stick in my memory until I don't buy cars anymore.

Why can the bulb replacement only be done by VW?

from what I can see it's:
          1-remove bumper grill
2-remove front guard liner (the forward/front pieces)
          3-remove bumper cover
          4-remove headlight assembly(s)
          5- replace bulb
          reverse to assemble.

So there's 3-4 hours of work there but it isn't outside the abilities of the enthusiast home mechanic with a 2.5mm torx bit.

The bulb is a D1S HID and commonly available.

          It's this bulb for $140 isn't it?

Powerbulbs have name -brand replacements for $120-$170 shipped.

There are cheapies on eBay for $8/pair posted

While I understand your frustration at VWs pricing structure, you have alternatives available. VW aren't a monopoly service provider.

Mate, I don't know if you talk from experience or just believe but trust me I have explored the possibility of replacing the bulb myself.

The full story is that I went to a garage to get a green slip. As the front bulb wasn't working it had to be replaced. They tried to order it from VW parts but were advised that after fitment the light level has to be measured and recertified. That garage was lacking equipment and skill to do so. I contacted another good quality garage I had used before and they would replace the bulb for $400 but also needed to order in a VW technican to recerify that crap bending light system which had been muddled with thrice during warranty.

So all up, VW ripped me on that one with their rigged service system. And yes, it seems to involve a bit more than removing headlight assembly.

You need to find the happy medium between VW Service & "a garage". Find yourself a decent independant VW specialist - they can do all that "measuring & recertifying". It's not rocket surgery.

If you live around Hurstville there aren't too many choices but if you're willing to travel a bit then there are a few good ones.

Anyway, i assume you have gone to Subaru. Don't expect a dream run with them either, nor cheap servicing / parts. Been there, done that.

The Passat is gone and history. A new Subaru Outback for $39,990 drive away (leather, GPS and all) was the target until I realized how really bad the inbuilt roof rack is. No chance of replacing that piece w/o taking the inner roof out... Got a plain Prado GX now. Big, bulky and thirsty. But at least it will take me places with the gear I want. Will whinge on another forum from now on.

Bolted on some steel side steps (short wife) and a heavy duty roof rack (hobby hubby) already. Tomorrow I will drill out the holes for the parking sensors. Really like that DIY truck feeling.

Ah, and yes, a 2.5t tow bar is only $560 fitted. Not $1800+ like VW quoted me once on the B6.

I think you have to be careful comparing the trade-in prices on different deals. Sometimes dealers will play around with the figures and make your trade-in look better or worse than it actually is. But certainly you'd expect to get more trading in a VW at a VW dealership than at another dealer.

The fact that the trade-in price from the VW dealer is so woeful would actually put me off buying another of the same car. I mean if the previous car depreciated like a brick then won't the next one do the same thing? So they expect you to stump up another $50k to have it worth virtually nothing in another 8 years?

Obviously your private sale price is closer to market value for the car and still represented good buying for the purchaser.

Of course do dealers play the trade-in/changeover game, but the specific Subaru dealer had the cheapest advertised price on carsales for an Outback in NSW already whereas the VW dealer's price was just very average. So the VW dealer had more room to maneuver but opted to p?ss me off with their low ball offer after having just given me their spiel of how well VW resale prices do hold up.

Yes, my purchaser was happy as with the pricing. It was probably 1-2k below market value but I was motivated to sell and ready to move on.

Yeah well you did $5k better by selling privately, even if you did sell a little lower than "market value".

Sounds like neither dealer really wanted your car and were going to wholesale it.

Though the VW dealer should be shot trying to sell you effectively the same car with 80,000 less kms for more than 10x the price.
