  • 2012 passat TDI start-stop is not working

    Hi Guys,

I recently purchased a 2012 passat TDI Bluemotion with start-stop.
Since last Sunday, the engine start - stop on traffic lights stopped working.
Today, I saw an error message on vehicle status error:start-stop.
The car has done 87000KM, and never replaced a battery.
Do you recon that is because the battery voltage or the capacity of the recharge and I need a new battery?
If anyone got the similar problem?

Thanks for your help and advise in advance.

    Hi Owen and welcome,

Personally I would be extra happy that the stop start wasn't working

If there is enough charge to start the car, then there should be enough charge for the stop start to function. As you are aware there are a multiple of factors that must be met for it to function ( engine temp, state of charge, and brake pedal pressure to name but a few ).

if there is an error message take a photo of it and take it into your friendly dealer for a look.

I'm having the same issue, some of the time. I have the MY11 model 125TDI. Not too happy since I only just got the vehicle recently. I'm new to the stop/start feature but I now disable it every time.
I have noticed the battery icon did remain on so I will get that checked out, I also suspect it's the battery.

Mine stopped working in early May. I booked it into the dealer for yesterday to check it out and removed the DTUK chip (installed about February) on Tuesday in preparation. Low and behold it started working again on Wednesday night and no error codes showed up. Maybe the chip caused it? I thought the chip is "donwstream" of all the computer controls. Interesting though that it took about 50km for the car to relearn and the auto stop to work again. Chip put back today. Will be interesting to see if the auto stop "stops" again.

Thanks mate, thought to post the error message photo here, but looks like my browser dose not support it. The car is still in warranty, so booked in for health inspection.

I had my car booked at VW and got them to check the battery. They kept the car for an overnight test and it came up with a warning error on the battery, lucky for me it was still under warranty so they replaced the battery. Lucky as a new battery is about $450!
Since then runs like a dream and stop start works every time, although I always disable it cause it's a bit annoying.
After reading that article too I suspected that it would somewhat affect the lifespan of some components.
