Driveway scraping - R36

The driveway at the in-laws is one of those nasty 45° gutters and I've recently noticed it's doing all kinds of pain to the front bumper/spoiler on my R36 =S

Does anyone know of a simple solution?

I only drive there once every week or two and have resorted to parking out on the street at the end of their long driveway..

Approach from an angle, and mount the gutter one wheel at a time.

Have tried approaching at an angle, but it still scrapes (especially when backing out).. There is a drain next to the driveway that makes life difficult.

I'm thinking of maybe some checkerplate or something - a couple of wood studs didn't help at all..

there's no easy way unfortunately. there's no off the shelf front splitter that can take the brunt of the scapes either as i looked into it quite extensively. i thought a poly splitter of some sort would be a good idea and could be removed once it gets damaged or you go to sell the car.

at my work there is only one way to get down the exit that i take on the way home, and that is to turn so sharply left that the right front wheel takes the edge of the driveway and the left front wheel goes over the kerb. this looks funny but there is no scraping, ever.

Carry a short length of 2x4 timber to put in the gutter for the wheel on that corner to drive over. Crude, and a bit inconvenient, but may save destroying your front bar every time.

I did try a couple pieces of wood, but the nose would meet the kerb before the wheels made it into the wood.. Maybe a piece of checker-plate steel (expensive'ish) or a much wider piece of wood would do it =/

I have seen some rubber solutions on eBay, but they cost $165 per piece and you need 2-3 pieces. I'd spend that on my driveway, but not somewhere I visit every 1-2 weeks. That and there's no guarantee someone won't walk off with them..

How about a ramp made out of plywood nailed/screwed to a bit of timber?

Or take the 125TDI when going to the out-laws instead?

My neighbour across the road has an interesting solution - he had the dip filled in with a line of ashphalt about a foot wide, with a channel about 2 inches square cut out so the stormwater can still get past the driveway. THere's nothing over the groove, so it sort of tends to fill up with leaves, but it seems to have solved the problem.

Ok, there are a few things.

First, approach your local council as they are required to provide a kerb crossing to specific dimensions regarding approach and departure angles. If it does not meet their requirements, they have to do something.

If it is within their requirements (and make sure they provide you with the relevant construction drawings), then there are a couple of things you can do.

You could have some steel plates made up that are bolted on your side of the kerb and sit over the kerb channel.

You can place a length of treated timber in the kerb channel itself and possibly bolt it at one or both ends.

You can buy some lengths of speed humps and bolt them to the kerb channel.

You can buy a length of heavy steel pipe (galvanised of course), and bolt it to the kerb channel.

The reason you have the problem is that the wheel drops into the kerb and what these pieces do is stop that.

I make these suggestions as my brother's partner's son was in a similar situation in the ACT. Despite the kerbing not meeting the ACT government's requirements, they refused to do anything, but hinted they'd turn a blind eye if one of these solutions were implemented and the gutters kept clear so that water did not flood elsewhere.
