  • B7 Highline 3.6 V6 oil?

I have a 2011 B7 Highline. I'm wanting to change my oil out every 5-6,000km's, but only want to do every second change at the dealers. Just wondering what the oil is to use? I figure its Castrol as that's what written on the cap. From poking around I can see both the fully synthetic Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 or 10W-60 get recommended. I imagine the 10W-60 would be far better for Australian temps, same oil I used in my E46 M3. What oil do others here use?

Nothing like what you are saying.

Anything VW 504.00/507.00 spec will keep your engine happy & your warranty intact. I haven't seen any that aren't 5w-30.

The readily available brands are Shell Helix Ultra EXTRA; LiquiMoley TopTech 4200; Penrite Enviro 5w-30. I don't think Castrol do a retail 504/507 but it is available in their workshop only Professional range. Just look for VW504.00/507.00 on the label.

There are a million threads on the correct oil & what is available - suggest you give that search bar a caning.

10w-60 - never have I seen any recomendation for that in any VWs post 2005. Maybe in one of the old dungers.

That's from 2007 so there have probably been some changes (and revisions of the bulletin) since then. I think Hillbilly has the latest list if you flick him a PM for the link.

Also it's the International list so something like Castrol Edge Sport 5w-30 is 504/507 in Europe but the formulation in AUS is only 502.00.

If you have a favourite oil brand then give their tech-reps a call & ask what they've got. Also, it should be approved - this means that the oil mfr has paid VW about AUD7k to test the oil & issue a letter saying it passed the test & is approved. Some of the oil companies just make an oil that meets the spec but they've never had it tested (Nulon springs to mind).

I use Enviro+ as its available at Supercrap and Autobarn The Prof III is $93 at Stealers so don't bother You have listed all the others that are available and the reasons why you shouldn't use others that are listed as "Suitable " for VW
If it hasn't got APPROVED for VW on it I wouldn't use it..
Heaps on the ERWIN list I have but really only the above ones readily available here. A read of this thread would be beneficial for the OP

The link posted in reply 2 is for USA which may or may not have different engines and most of those oils aren't available here

Have to admit I'm probably partial to Castrol, served my M3 well and when I sold the car the internals (cams/valve area) were gleaming and sludge free, and that was with regular caning. When I input my car into this on the Castrol website (Passat 3.6 V6 4Motion 220kw 2010-2014) it comes up with the Castrol Edge 5W-30

            Castrol Australia - NetLube

Anyways, I'll go have a gander and check it has APPROVED for VW on it. If necessary I'll just buy at VW stealer.
I've only had the car a few weeks, when I first got it it was leaving soot on the tailpipes after every drive. I've since cleaned the MAF sensor and opened it up quite a few times now, soot has now cleared altogether. Have to admit when you put it in S mode on the gearbox it totally changes its personality, put your foot down and its pretty bloody quick! Adaptive chassis control is excellent also. I can see a supersprint system order in the near future...

Penrite Enviro+ is about $20 cheaper I have been using Penrite oils for past 7 years with no problems.

The Edge is on the approved list as a 504/507 Just check on the bottle

Link doesn't work but I worked it out they appear to have up-specced the edge to 504/507 and it does say "approved for use in VW Group vehicles that require a VW 504 00 / 507 00" but the TDS say 502.00/505.00 so your guess is as good as mine. It really annoys me on the Castrol site that they give you the answers but they aren't hotlinked mack to the marketing, TDS & MSDS pages.

Wife brought home a CC V6 from the pool at her work not long back. She accidently put it in sport & gave it a bootfull. I thought she was going to embarras herself there & then. Fun cars.

That is 21.50 a Litre on there so why not just buy 5L of Penrite or Shell Ultra Extra for about $69.

Brad & I have told you the popular ones that most of us use so whats wrong with them..

We also posted the link to why you should use them

Your money your car I guess

Factory service intervals are 15 000 km or 12 months, whichever is reached first.

IMO, if you feel inclined to do an interim oil change, I think an interval of 7 500 km or 6 months would be more than sufficient. I don't think a more frequent schedule would achieve anything of value.

Castrol is Volkswagen's commercial and technical partner, but one is not beholden to use exclusively Castrol engine lubricants.

The easiest way of selecting a suitable lubricant is to check whether it has VW 502.00 or VW 504.00 on the label, which are VW oil specifications. Others have already explained the nuance between approved and unapproved oils.

There is nothing in Volkswagen literature that states a recommended or specific viscosity grade, but if pressed for choice, 5W-30 is used in a lot of modern VWs.

Using an engine lubricant with a heavier viscosity grade than is necessary adversely affects efficiency, which saps power and fuel economy simultaneously. It also means the engine has to work harder and use more energy to get the oil flowing, which is reflected in increased oil temperatures.

If it were me, I would avoid using a 10W-60 grade motor oil for any modern car unless specified.

On the other hand, Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W-60 and Castrol EDGE Professional TWS 10W-60 (and not Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 nor Castrol Edge 10W-60 SN) are the only approved oils for BMW M models, so that's a different story.

Thanks for the info, I had lots of input yesterday from the good folks here and have figured out what to use. I guess I was somewhat keen (and green) on the 10W-60 at the time due to putting that in my BMW M car. I will still be using Castrol, just the correct spec

Here's one thread among many I just found on early oil changes in E46 M3's. As you can see changing your oil out early can make massive differences. Mine at 106,000km's looked pretty much like the 4th picture down.
