exhaust system for 2010 R36 passat

Hi all, without wishing to start to much of a debate about the pro's & con's off the super sprint v rest of the world exhaust systems does anybody have any recommendations for exhaust options for a low k 2010 R36 Passat wagon.
I am currently looking at upgrading the stock exhaust system with an aftermarket system, preferably a full system & I am finding it very hard to justify outlaying $9498 (full) or $3994 (cat back) plus install for a supersprint system. I am not denying that they look & sound great but to spend close to a 1/4 of my cars value on a full system for very small power gains (if any?) just doesn't add up for me & it seems as though not too many manufacturers bother catering for anything that isn't a Golf GTi or R.
I have contacted High Tech mufflers & they quoted me $2700 for a full custom stainless system, which is pretty much the ball park figure for me. I believe that they have done a number of R36's. Does anybody have any info in regards to this or have they had an R36 exhaust from them?
Would be keen to know what the exhaust sound / performance gains were
All my research suggests they are first rate in quality & performance in fact i havent heard anybody say a bad word about them.
In short my hopes in regards to the exhaust are some minor power/torque gains (5-10% maybe) should be acheivable & to unleash that beautiful R36 exhaust sound. What I don't want is cabin drone or a stupidly loud sound.
The exhaust mod will be followed by an ecu tune & filter.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Unfortunately finding a good exhaust shop to manufacture a custom system is probably going to give you the best outcome.

I've ended up going custom on my Tiguan (because there just wasn't anything available) and love the result, though it has taken a couple of shots to get it right.

The only problem with a custom job is that it doesn't help anyone else who may be thinking about it unless they can get to the same shop or get the spec on all the parts used and get the same thing fabricated locally.

The other thing is exhaust note is very personal and what one person loves another will find they can't live with. But agree drone on a luxury car is not a desirable outcome.

i havent had a R36 done by Hi Tech,but i have had an exhaust from them.i had the catback on my turbo forester and it was the best sound and quality exhaust i have ever had.no drone,perfect under WOT,quality all the way.so have no doubt you will be getting a first rate system from themif you go that way.

I've had a few mates who have had their Subies done through them & I know that they do some stuff for STI at Docklands as well.
Appreciate the imput & all me research & word of mouth points to the fact that they provide a quality product so pretty sure i will head that way

Yes volumes of exhausts would be pretty low for R36 and even lower for Tiguan so doesn't justify the cost of development/stocking. Or if someone spends the time to develop a product with all the tooling they will cost a fortune.

Just make sure you don't get convinced to go non-resonated. I did this initially but it was way too loud.

Thanks - exterior upgrades of the Tig are minimal. Just some minor tweaks so it still looks stock(ish). Aftermarket body kits look cheap and a bit tacky IMHO.

I was/am still contemplating buying the SuperSprint headers and then have HTM build the rest of the system for my R36 wagon. The one thing that frightens me is drone... I cannot cope with drone, its an absolute deal breaker. SS vouch that their complete system is 100% drone free and I have no reason to doubt that, but $10k for an exhaust system...??? Thats so not going to happen.

I did get a quote from SS directly and it came in a EU4,414.00 delivered for headers to the tailpipes. Thats still a heap of cash! Plus they only make the headers for L/H drive cars, they can't say if they'd fit on a R/H drive car.

I use City Performance Centre in Artarmon to do all of my major mods and they've advised that they certainly can mod the L/H drive headers to suit my R/H drive model, but thats even more cost and what if the mods alter the performance gains the SS headers extract from the engine. Headers are finely tuned things and cutting one piece of pipe out and replacing it with another could remove any possible gains that may have been there - plus I'd also then have to have the car chipped again to suit the new exhaust dynamics...

And on it goes... its very frustrating because one look at the OEM exhaust manifold/s is enough to see that they certainly don't appear to be a finely tuned item such as the SS headers do...

Maybe a group buy for the headers would reduce the costs somewhat? Could be worth a try... if we had, say 10 people who'd put the cash down for 10 x sets of SS headers and then 10 x HTM rest-of-system components, we may stand a chance of saving a few bucks?

Was the quote you got from SS an online quote?

It was way cheaper than my online quote from SS which came in at EU $5,751 & im not even sure if that inc shipping or GST!!

I have also been receiving conflicting info in regards to the L/H - R/H drive headers. At first I was told that the headers only came in L/H drive but then I received a quote from Ramspeed in Sydney & there was no mention of a cutting & welding procedure so I just assumed that they did make a R/H drive version.

The other problem that I am having in regards to the SS system is that I am finding it very hard to get any clear figures/info in regards to power/performance gains. Whilst I understand that many manufacturers will pump up their gains & promise unachievable results, it is extremely hard to justify a 10k outlay for a performance enhancing product when you have no idea of the benefits. If any body out there has fitted the full or cat back SS system I would love to here or know the results.

As previously said there is no denying that the SS system especially the headers & cats are a work of art & it could be argued that in looks & workmanship alone the cost is justified.

However my well optioned candy white 2010 MY10.5 R36 wagon(dynaudio/sunroof/RNS510/reverse camera/bluetooth/pwr tailgate) with 41k on the clock cost me 43k (through a dealer friend) so the cost of the full SS system represents a shade under a 1/4 of the cars cost so I just cant justify the outlay

Also my research has found thus far through people & dealers that I have talked to & contacted that the performance gains from the full SS system may be as low as 5-10kw, not sure how accurate this is BUT it certainly didn't come from anti SS dealers, infact it was from SS dealers however I cant recall who as I have been researching this on & off for about 6mths & have info & contacts written every where. Once again if anybody has installed the SS system & as info to say otherwise I would love to hear from you.

I am hopefully heading out to see & talk to the guys at High tech this friday so will keep you informed of what i find out

In relation to carrying out he any mods on my car that I cant do myself such as the ECU tune, how do you find City Performance Centre in Artarmon, I havent decided on any where yet, was thinking of Ramspeed.
Did you get your ECU done there?
How did you find the performance gains?

Also I would be open to hearing any thoughts on a group buy if it turned out to be cost effective however I am looking at spending between $2,500-$3,500 max on the system so not sure if that is attainable.
Let me know your thoughts

The quote I got was from emailing them directly. I had an email exchange of about four emails from the sales lady and the engineer whereby we discussed the left hand/right hand drive issue. The reality is that they don't make a R/H version and the engineer couldn't advise if the L/h system would fit without a mod to either the car or the headers - that makes sense as they'd rarely have the chance to see a R/H drive car in Italy. On the price I mentioned, that was delivered to my door and it included a 30% discount off list - not bad really!

Regarding performance gains, well, it's all in the interpretation from what I can tell. The SS site shows a reasonable increase of about 15kw - tune dependant, but one thing is for sure, they'd sure make the car sound a lot better!

I started at RamSpeed and I thought they were ok, they fitted some new drilled rear discs for me and flushed the brake lines. They also fitted a CAI which "seemed" to make a difference in power, but that can be misleading as the intake noise is terrific and the noise perception can alter ones reality!

The reason I switched to CPC was on a recommendation from AP (the guy with the twin turbo R36 engine in his Golf - 650bhp!). CPC did that job for him and at the time I was considering a turbo system or a SuperCharging system for the car, the costs came in way to high to consider so I left it alone.since then I've had CPC fit a new KW V3 coil over kit and new K&R sway bars, as well as a set of 5 new Oz Racing wheels. The work they did was tremendous and the pricing was reasonable, but their after service is very, very good. And their track record with not only Vee Dubs, but most other performance brands speak for themselves. And, they're good guys too!

Then I heard on the grapevine that RUF have developed a SC kit for the R36 engine, and it's only around $15k fitted... That's got me thinking again!

However the zorst bug still gnaws away at me, I'd love to do some upgrades on this issue, but I can't be spending $7k-$8k on a zorst system, the wife would have several fits!

I had my tune done by Peter at SuperChips - I highly recommend this, it was a massive improvement in both power and economy. Have a search on this site for the thread. I wrote a few entries in it that you may find interesting.
