  • R36 Wagon LED Licence Plate Lights Install with Pics

    OK guys,
next on my list of LED upgrades is the licence plate. I was having a really good look around and I was quite shocked to see the prices of some of these items. Some upwards of $100. I found this site (1 Pair Error Free 3528 24 SMD LED License Plate Light SET FOR Audi TT Q5 A4 5 | eBay) which had them at $17.78 and decided to give it a go. Well I received the items yesterday and I was quite surprised. The quality was great. They were individually wrapped. Well, the next part was installing them. It looked simple but wasn't really until you know what you were doing. Well I did some searching online and eventually worked it out. I'll save you the hassle. All you do is get a decent sized flathead screwdriver and insert it in the slot on the face of the light that is already in the car. You then have to try and push it towards the opposite end of the light. I think that in all cases it should be to the right. Now, it is a little difficult and tough but you push right and at the same time, you try and pull it out. Maybe a small flathead under the same end as the slot you have the big screwdriver in, helps. You will work it out though as I did. Once the light assembly is free, unclip and replace with the new LED version. Simply reverse the process to install in the car again.
The LED's are quite bright compared to the dull yellow standard globes but it is certainly whiter and they match the same colour as my puddle lights which is great. Might have to look at some new parker globes as they seem too blue compared to all the others including the xenon headlights.
    Anyhow, hope these pics help.

Looks great. Just tried ordering and the item says they don't ship to Australia. Did you have any issues? I have popped a question to the seller.

No mate. No problem whatsoever. If you do the correct word search you can find similar products for around the same price. Im surprised that there is a problem!

Bumping this thread up rather than creating a new one, I bought the exact listed items and they do not seem to fit my MY10.5 R36 wagon. I am thinking they might have changed the plugs between model years. I'll take a picture for you when it's daylight but the plug coming out of the car is bigger physically than the hole for the plug on the aftermarket LED module, although the pins are correct.

Just had another look at snerlo's pics, my factory light module looks physically a bit different from his. They have definitely revised the factory module with a different plug. I might see if I can cut the plastic surrounding the pins on the aftermarket module to make it fit.

I use the T10 W5W CANBUS error free LED bulbs I previously bought for the parkers, same effect, super easy and low cost.

That's my backup plan as well, I'll see how I go modding these, I have nothing to lose really if it doesn't work out.

Doesn't that sound just absolutely ridiculous that they would change the shape of the hole mid life in a car's cycle considering it is simply a light fitting. I can't believe it. Sorry mate. Didn't realise that they were different. Yeah, as Passat R36 has said, use a T10.
Just on that, my standard light that came out is a festoon type bulb!! Makes it even more weird that they would change the bulb type!!

Haha don't apologise mate, it's not your fault, how could you know! What a thing, hey! All good though, I will just get some small T10 bulbs.

also, FYI, for the wing mirror puddle light, you can use non-CANbus error free T10 W5W bulbs on MY10 R36. easy and cheap mods as well.
for interior lighting, I actually like the factory yellow lights, they are warmer and suit my liking.

Agreed! I have those proper panel LED's en route for the wing mirror puddles, they should fit no worries as I don't think there has been a silly revision for those. I have no desire to change the interior lighting.

My bend/cornering lighting though, I had some big 120SMD LED ones which work great when they first turn on, but then when the car tries to fade them out, it then throws the error and they won't come on again until you reset ignition. What did you guys do for these? Also not sure what to do for reverse/fog as LED's are probably insufficiently bright for these.

I haven't changed the cornering light or the reverse or the fog lights yet. I'm not going to touch the reversing or fog lights I don't think, but the corner lights are something that I will get around to one day!!

Hi, can you share links for these T10 error free LEDs/Lamps?

I was thinking, it's a shame there isn't a comprehensive list of MY version changes, I guess the list is long and difficult to build a comparative table for.

BTW, I've been trying to assemble a eBay Collection for the R36: Electronics, Cars, Fashion, Collectibles, Coupons and More | eBay
