After driving a relatively new Passat TSI rental car for about two hours, I removed the "key" from the on/off holder. It was quite hot (50C at a guess) on the innermost portion of the key. The car had air conditioning on, GPS on and radio on in terms of electrical drain. Outside air temperature was about 30C. Is this temperature normal for the key?

it's just a cheap and poor design, the key remains hot for sometime after removal from the vehicle.
easiest fix would be to just make push start/stop standard and include their "convenience" package as standard rather than in typical German manufacturer fashion... cash grab for basic extras.
