  • R36 factory tint

I just bought a R36 from QLD and took it to be ID inspected in SA. Unfortunately I'm told that the tint is too dark and it needs to be removed. The seller tells me that the tint is factory from VW - does anyone know if that matters? Should I try and get some supporting evidence from VW?

VW's do have factory tinted glass. You can you usually tell as only the rear window and rear passenger windows are tinted.

Problems can be if more tint is applied to the rear (over the top of the VW tint) which will make it over the limit for darkness. fronts do not get the dark tint from factory and should be lighter.

Both my Amarok and old CC Passat had factory tint, whereas my R36 did not get it (weird though). It may be part of an option i.e. comfort package?

    Darks

If it's factory tint then the only way to remove it is to replace the glass. I assume they (Regency??) are knocking back anything rear of the b-pillar?

If it's either of the two front windows then it isn't factory tint - just a film.

      Ring VW Customer Assist.

Also, throw it back at the inspector & ask them to show you the relevant legislation regarding window tint.

      SA regs

Your allowed 35% on all side & rear windows.

Chassis and body modifications - Government of South Australia

Also, they keep referring to a coating but factory privacy tint isn't a coating, its embedded in the glass (body tint) and there is no reference to VLT of body tint in the documents I've seen.

Yeah I'm thinking that it is a factory option that was fitted by VW in QLD.

TransportSA claim that it is 25% all round. Definitely the front windows are too dark, but the rears I am not so sure. I too thought it would be privacy glass, but it seems as though it is a film (can see the silver bits around the edge of the window).

factory fit is not the same as a dealer fitted option.

if the fronts are dark then it has an aftermarket tint pure and simple. the only real way to counter balance the rear tints is to only have after market tint of the two front windows.

            Not the same thing.

You'll have to get it stripped. Tint people can do it easy enough

Privacy glass is the devil! It's black glass with ZERO UV/IR filtering so in direct sunlight it attracts the heat and draws it in to the car, and you're not allowed to tint over it..

Your VW will have slightly tinted glass so make sure you don't get 35% tint put on as you'll be over the limit. I had 38% put on mine all round at a cost of about $700 (estate and got the most expensive I could get with extra UV/IR filtering)

You can get clear film put over the privacy glass that has 99.9% UV.

Agree there are a lot of people out there that think they are getting the same protection from privacy glass as equivalent film.

                        $700 for tint. jeebuz...

Are you sure it's legal to put the film over the privacy glass? I'm 99% sure it's illegal in ACT and NSW.

Yeap, I was aware of cheaper alternatives and had actually booked cheaper tint (@ $500) but when I turned up for the booking I changed my mind for the more expensive stuff. I'm not always guaranteed a carpark at home or work so in the summer the car can sit outside in the 40 degree heat. If I have the car for 5 years I'm sure the sun would do enough damage to the interior to drop the value of the car by more than the extra $200 I spent on the tint.. Plus it's worked wonders, the climate control only puts the A/C on '3' (out of 7 from memory) even when the temp gauge shows 46 degrees.

It's clear film. 100% VLT but 99.9% UV block

Ok so the rear windows on the R36's came out with "Privacy Glass". It is a tint that is actually in the glass and can not be removed without replacing the glass. Unless of course as stated by others on this thread that someone has tinted the "Privacy Glass". Take to a local tint shop and get them to check it. They can tell the difference. Look for a corner at the top of the glass panel. You will see an edge if you look closely, that indicates a tint.
