  • R36 Bi-Xenon Question

For all you R36 drivers out there, do your bi-xenons do the self levelling dip when they come on. I noticed that mine dont although they do corner along with the cornering light that comes on. The reason i am asking is that i need to raise them up a touch as they point into the ground a little bit too much so i am going to wind them up tonight a fraction to get a little bit better throw. Interested to know how others operate. Thanks.

The bi xenon should do a startup level operation which will depend on the load in the rear of the vehicle and compensate accordingly. They can be adjusted manually from there on a level surface with a large phillips driver on top of headlight.

Guys, false alert. Sorry. The lights do do a dip, then they either look right, or do a cross eyed manouver. It just takes about 7 or 8 seconds after they come on to do it which is a little unusual but at least they do it. I did adjust them up a touch though so hopefully it takes that adjustment on board. Anyhow, sorry again guys. Just didn't have the patience to watch for it!

They only do the self-check when you first start the car. If the lights come on while you're driving, they just come on without the self-check.

To the best of my knowledge, the self check is triggered when the engine is started, so you can turn the ignition on without starting the engine, and the lights will not do their self check.

The self-check consists of the lights going down, then outwards, and back in again, before raising to the correct angle.

Mine has an issue at the moment where the horizontal movement on the passenger side light is not smooth. The headlight was replaced by the dealership under warranty, but the movement is still not smooth, and the beam pattern is all wrong. It's going back next week for them to have another go at it.

            Hi all

With regards to the cornering function, mine only track with the steering when on high-beam only... on low beam they remain static and the other passive cornering lights activate instead.

            Is that normal?

              What model do you have?

On mine, the adaptive front lighting system function works when you're travelling above 10kmh and the headlights are on (high or low beam). The static cornering lights work when your speed is below 45km/h, so there's an overlap when both systems are active.

What kleung said is correct although I haven't noticed the speeds at which they swap over. It really is a bizarre thing seeing your headlights move around with the steering input. It just feels off putting but I'm sure I'll get used to it!! The bi-xenon lights are quite good although the high beam is a little weak compared to our jetta and my XR8 whoops it for high beam functionality.

It should definitely aim around corners then!
