  • Passat Alltrack Towbar

Just had a Hayman Reese bar installed today, great job and minimal cutting of the rear bumber. I have read previously that a Bar for the Alltrack does not exist - you just need to look further.

A very timely post as I'm just starting to research getting a towbar for my Alltrack.

Did you get the genuine VW wiring loom fitted and coded or go with the Hayman Reese one. What was the Hayman Reese part/model number?

    Cheers, Graeme

I'd be keen to see pics too if not too much trouble. I just cancelled the towbar order for the Alltrack we should be receiving next week for two reasons:

        - The ridiculously large hole required in the bumper
        - The unusually low max ball weight of the VW towbar (90kg) - I think the HR unit is rated at around 180kg which is much more practical.

The towball weight is usually set by the vehicle maker and probably shouldn't be exceeded despite what the towbar maker says.

A standard Passat has a limit of 85kg in my brochure. I certainly wouldn't like to put 180kg on the back of my vehicle.

The genuine one is ADR-legal, and the HR one is not. Hence being of a more-appropriate design for the vehicle.

I saw a genuine one fitted the other day to an Alltrack. Looks like it's meant to be there. Not sure what the fuss is.

I think I posted photos of our VW original install, which is/was a very well and professionally done job. Also think that you are asking for trouble is you really want to put 185kg on your towbar.

I emailed HR as to the compliance and sensibility of the towball weight being twice what VW recommended and haven't had a reply in over a week.

Speedy towbars and exhausts at Everton Hills Brisbane did the job. And what a job....

Nice, better than the whale's mouth I have at the back of mine. You're looks like I'd hope mine had been. VW really should have thought about matching it to the car rather than just shoehorning the std Passat unit which required such a large cutout. The same is just not visible on the std Passat given the black valance vs the silver Alltrack valance.

You need the big cut-out to have access to the 13-pin connector and the pin for the tongue.

If you try and make the cut-out smaller, the customer complains that they can't get their hands in to disconnect everything.

Looks like a tidy job, where did you get it done? Do you know what the HR part number was.

My issue is purely based on the lack of thought from VW for the Alltrack, given how poor the solution is from an aesthetic point of view. Sure its functional, but most cars like this lend themselves to towing given the people who go for them, but the design function doesn't suit the styling with the faux aluminium valance. Poor design from a company who normally excels.
