  • Power behind Rear Vision Mirror - Alltrack?

    Hi Folks,

looking to install a Dash Camera (Vico Vation WF-1) in my wifes' new Alltrack, and hoping someone can advise what power there is available in the roof console, and how I get it apart to be able to tap some power for the camera...

    Cheers,

    Andrew

You will need to probably get power from the fuse box area and run it up the A pillar. probably won't be a good idea to tap off something else as you could overload the circuit.

Yeah... I'm just going to use one of those add a circuit fuse things...

And tuck the power cable behind the a pillar and under the head lining along the windscreen...

It wouldn't be hard to add a fuse position to the actual fuse box in VW. I have done it is golf mkv previously.

Here is a guide for golf, wouldn't be hard for Passat. I am going to be doing this when I get around to dash cam installation.

Yeah, there should be a couple of spare live fuse slots on either end of the dash.

The electrics up in the roof for the mirror and interior lights are most likely powered up off a couple of control modules, so not entirely a good idea to tap into them for a power feed.

There are spare fuse slots in drivers end of the dash I can take a pic and post it for you if you like I have a Power magic installed and you need a couple of fuses available from Jaycar and just put them in a spare slot .

Don't need those adda fuse as they are a bit high to fit in there.

Use the B7 Fuse assignment from left column Right hand end of B7 dash

Number 11 has switched power when ign on. Fuse is a MINI Jaycar Part no SF5120

Number 29 has PERMANENT power Fuse is a STANDARD Jaycar part no SF5110

              $6.95 each

There is a screw just above the fuse holder that I used for my earth If you use a ciggy socket you don't need a line fuse

Jaycar Part no PS 2003 $3.95

I just bought the ciggy socket and connected it to the lead off the fuses and taped it all together so I could reuse the stuff if I sell the car.

Wiring runs along join between dash and the A pillar and along behind front of headlining Be careful you run it up the front of the pillar beside the windscreen because of the airbag at the top of the pillar . If you don't have Parking mode you only need the MINI fuse to turn camera on with ign. I have a rear camera which stays on for up to 3 hours and so need the permanent feed.

A lot of work to do that Just stick a fuse in a spare slot like I did and away it will go The fuse box is rather different in the Passat.

Has been ok for 2 years now

I was going to say - that's a HELL of a lot of stuffing about just to add a fuse! after you added the fuse, how did you pick up the power on the other side of it? that's my challenge at the moment...

don't get me wrong - I know my way around a car, but the electrics of the VW's have me a little wary...

I've got the same install to do in my Amarok when it gets delivered, but there are interface plugs under the dash that will make that a lot easier...

You can use those fuses with a terminal on them that you can hook up to.

Amarok, you can use the same setup.

Having just said that, I just looked at the jaycar product and hey are very interesting indeed. I am almost thinking about not bothering with ripping apart fuse box for additional circuits.

I did so with the golf and adding reverse camera into kl15 always on power.

You could always do it the same way we add the OEM circuitry into them for towbars. You basically add your wiring to the rear side of the fuse box, with your desired fuse in the front like normal. Untrained eye wouldn't pick it.

I reckon these are a more elegant solution than the Jaycar one 2X Fuse Holder Piggy Back ADD A Circuit Mini Blade Fuse UHF Stereo Lights | eBay
