  • Changing parking lights for LED's

    Hi

Is someone able to instruct me on how to get access to the R36 parking lights (in the main headlight unit).

I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I'm not the dullest either, but from what I can see it looks like a complete headlight removal in order to get access to them..! Tell me I'm wrong here!

Also, can someone advise what the replacement globe are? IE: H5, H7 etc? I've managed to change all exterior lights to CANBUS friendly LED's so far, but I have the parkers, the passive turn lamps and the front indicators to go.

If anyone knows the lamp codes for these too I'd be very grateful!

    Take care...

You don't need to remove the headlight. Just remove the headlight cover and reach in from the back of the assembly. It is a little hard to access but you'll need a little patience especially when placing the new ones in as the hole is tight. If I recall correctly one side is easier than the other due to accessibility. Parker's are T10.

I've ordered some canbus bay9s for my front turn signals but yet to arrive. Had to buy 6pcs which was cheaper then I'll sell the balance 4 once I get them working.
Haven't had a chance to replace the static cornering lamps yet.
My interiors were replaced with warm white LEDs which look a lot better than whites.

Update: received my BAY9S leds today

If you'd like to sell the LED's that you're not going to use I'd be keen to buy them...?

          Lemme know!

Sure. I'll test it on my car to see if they're suitable first.

Yes, I bought some LED inserts that replace the red reflector on the doors. They come with the cables etc and its just a matter of tapping the cables in to a small power board in the doors. Each door has one. They light up very brightly when the door is opened. The look cool and they sure do illuminate where you're about to stand...

I got them on eBay, I can't remember where from though. Do a Google, or an eBay search, they'll turn up...

If its the puddle lamps on the mirrors you're after - easy.
Push the mirror assembly forward all the way till it clicks. You gotta just slightly lift+push the mirror assembly. You'll see a Torx screw to remove. Then use a small screwdriver/credit card to prick the inner corner latch. Then just plug out the bulb and replace. Try to adjust the LED bulb angle to maximize the brightness on the road.

Update: My turn signal LED's aren't working on the car.
Tested the bulbs, but they light up with a 9V battery power (didn't have a 12V source at home). Checked the polarity and seems correct. Assuming its to do with the blinking/flashers I read online..
Any ideas anyone from those whom installed LED into their turn signals?

Are the LED's CANBUS friendly versions? This is critical. If theres no resistor in the LED unit, the CANBUS thinks theres no globe/broken globe there and this results in a fault warning. The resister provides "resistance" funnily enough, and this tricks the CANBUS in to thinking that theres a normal globe there and its working because of the electrical load provided by the resistor... LED's work on tiny amounts of power and therefore provide no resistance, so a fault is reported.

What globe type is used in the indicators? As is T10, H5, H7, 501 etc?

I've also seen/heard of LED CANBUS friendly relays which do the on/off switching on the indicators. It may be that you will need one of these as well as the CANBUS friendly LED's to make it all work... Nothings easy is it!

Have a look at: Fix Flash Rate Turn Signal [Flasher Relay LED indicator bulbs] 3 PIN CF14 JL-02 | eBay

Also, these guys seem to have a pretty good selection: Headlights bulbs, LED bulbs for car items in Mylitco Auto Accessories Aftermarket Parts store on eBay!

They are the H21W/Bay9s CANBUS one's. (assuming they are true CANBUS??).

I can see resistors on the assembly. No errors on dash. Just doesn't light up.
I'll need to figure out what's wrong over the weekend.

                          Hi,

Update to this thread. Success in getting the turn signals to LED but needs a minor mod.
I first did some researching online and found out about our B6 (together with the Audi B6 models) using CK sockets (not standard) for the turn signals. Normal bulbs don't require polarity to work but LEDs do.
CK sockets actually have their polarity reversed which was why my LED's weren't working as suspected.

I used that online idea to test using wires and the LED bulb by swapping the test wires at the source of the connector. Surprisingly it works and LED blinks normally. So the LEDs works perfectly as it should.
                          Made a quick video here.

                              Hey there

I'm a bit confused... so you swapped the wires around in reverse on the indicator housings to make them work?

Did you also have to fit a CANBUS friendly LED relay?

                              Curious....
