  • Passat rear brake help!!

    Evening fellow Passat purchasers!

Just wanted to get some background information.

My mechanic has notified me my read brakes will need replacing soon, although I would normally do this myself he instructed me this was going to be a hard job. I feel out of my depth with the electronic rear brake. Noted I have not pulled the brakes apart I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on an estimation of cost and if I need a VW specialist to attend to the issue. Can anyone reccomend someone?

    Thanks guys,

    Mitch

I was read on another forum (I think VW PAssat Forum) that you need to plug VCDS and battery charger (to have constant 12V) and after that you can change rear brake pads if you have electronic handbrake.
If I find complete DIY I will post here.

its no harder than a normal rear brake set up.. 2 bolts to remove the caliper and 2 bolts to remove to pad holder. you just need VCDS to wind back and forward the pistons instead of manually and also carry out basic settings afterwards... VDUB...

Correct. Due to the electronic parking brake, the motors on the calipers need to be retracted and reset with VCDS, or VagCom, or VAS-PC.

Thanks guys!!! that has helped a lot..

Any rough estimations on price to get it done?? Thinking i might get the Park brake switch replaced as it faults sometimes... Is this common in the passat?

VCDS winds the pistons back , but you still need to push them back manually .

Yes, park brake switches are a know issue and worth getting replaced before you get it jammed on and unable to release...VDUB..

                  Re: Passat rear brake help!!

I paid about $400 to get mine done at Pedders, but was not much cheaper than the dealer. Was on 2008 TDI wagon

I do recall that with the electric parking brake, there is a set procedure via VCDS that has to be followed to release and reset the brake pads etc.
