On a previous car, the damper/strut would 'pop'/'klonk'/clunk when I would go over a speed bump above a certain speed . . . turned out to be a dodgy damper in that case - the valve would work OK in one direction (compression) but give up under the pressure of going the other way under full load (coming off a bump where the spring is giving the wheel a big push towards the other end of travel limit/s).

It can be very annoying when the problem is intermittent - my (admittedly frustrating) experience is that it will not 'perform on demand' when the dealer is looking at it but comes back as soon as you drive off!!
      My thoughts exactly.
I thought by giving a demo test piece, all would be made clear. BUT service dept. has opted for what they think most logical answer.
Reason for giving test piece was that I found problem occurred only on inside rear wheel, AND was also evident going over supermarket speed humps.
Going over sags in road, eg, repaired potholes sagging again, no problem. Other parts of road with big undulations, so being tossed each way in driving seat, no problems.
Problem occurs with road surface having an inch or so upwards bumps.
Will try to obtain test drive on another Passat, or try to take sales guy with me and see what he thinks
I do admit it is possible I am being very critical, but previous Golf did NOT make these suspension noises.
In the meantime, waiting so can demonstrate with close to empty fuel tank.

By the way, problem occurred twice when just leaving dealer, but no sign rest of way home (9km poor roads)

Koni Yellows are traditionally very compliant on initial bump but it would be a $1000 roll of the dice.

Is it shocks or springs that are too harsh? You could also get slightly longer springs of a slightly lesser spring rate done.

Sees odd you couldn't test drive a car. There's the local dealer in Moss Vale and Nowra, Wollongong, Campbelltown, Liverpool, Sutherland are all <100km from you. AT dealers aren't that far away either.

        GL with it
Very happy otherwise with local dealer, unfortunately however only has small stock of VW, mixed in with Mitsubishi, Holden etc.
Went to Campbelltown for test drive and upholstery colour, and to Wollongong for appearance of Autumn Brown paint.
Sales manager happy to give test drive of V6 when next unit arrives, but cautions V6 not very popular. So will take a while to evaluate difference.
In the meantime local service manager will look for possibility of retro fit of ACC, but warns wiring harness unlikely to accommodate.
