Thanks again Brad. It is the fronts so that's good I suppose from a labour point of view. Mine is one with the electric park brake. When it comes to the rears I will be guided by the "experts".

Ian, what sort of car do you drive? Are they OEM pads/rotors? I engine brake as well to balance out the load & progressively brake unless something onforeseen happens (rare). Based on current wear, the only way I would get your sort of wear was by not using the pedal at all

No their the original pads, but being diesel it self brakes once you take your foot off the accelerator ,plus I always drive in defensive mode driving at least 3 cars in front . ive done 57,000KM

Actually, for Passat B7 (since release) and CC (from 2011) models with the 3.6 l 220 kW engine, the front brake pads have a lining thickness of 13 mm, excluding back plate.

For all other Passat B5, B6, B7 & CC models, it's 14 mm, excl. back plate.

The warning light on the dash is supposed to come on when there's approximately 4 mm remaining (if equipped).

The wear limit is 2 mm.

Without taking the wheel off it looks like there's heaps of life left. Probably around 8mm on each pad.

As brad alluded to, it may be wise to verify exactly the condition of the brake pads to determine whether you are receiving a false reading or otherwise.

can anyone confirm that there is only one brake pad sensor on a B6 Passat? And if so, is it on the front driver pad?
I ask because my rear pads looks like they have less meat on them and maybe that's whats triggering the MFD warning light.

Also, what are good aftermarket pads and rotors to get?

There should be a front & a rear sensor.

Remsa are good bang for buck & OEM VW suppliers (and less dusty). Get a price off the forum sponsor GLS rallisport (look in the sponsor area). He's multi-brand so should have something to suit your needs

I've already got a quote for the Remsa from Rallisport. Just wondering if anyone's using anything else out there. I've seen in the U.S. some people use Hawk. Not sure if you can get them here. I might look into it just incase.

What about Rotors? Should I just get them from VW?

Rallisport as well. He should have several brands to choose from (RDA, DBA & a couple of Euro brands) & several brands of pads. What you choose depends how you drive.

Or try ECS Tuning for pads & rotors or Adams rotors are very nice

The wear sensor is attached to the inner front brake pad. It might be on the passenger side (being a vehicle predominately designed for LHD markets), but I'm not 100% certain.

As brad said, you should check whether the inner front brake pads are wearing abnormally.

The rear brake pads do not come with a wear sensor.

Well there you go. I assumed if a Skoda had them, so would a more expensive Passat. Hardly seems worthwhile to monitor 1 pad out of 8

I suppose if the bean counters told the engineers that there was only one pad to put the sensor on, it'd be the inner left front, because:

The driver sits on the left (it's a European car after all).
The fronts do most of the work during moderate-to-heavy braking manoeuvres.
The inner pads can't be inspected easily.
The savings you make by not having to buy 7 wear sensors per vehicle ($5 each x 7 x 200,000 vehicles per year = $7 million).
The average consumer won't notice or care.

But crucially, it keeps the shareholders happy.

I've seen on some DIY threads that you may need to cut the old one off and solder it onto the new pads.

I can't say from experience, but I would think that Remsa, as a manufacturer based in Europe, are likely to make correctly fitting parts... ?

Ask the guy that sells them. I believe that as OEM replacements, they are plug & play
