  • IF you need to break a window to get into your Passat B6/7 Wagon don't break the rear

    Quarters.

Keys locked inside a bag in the back of the car - car was deadlocked so no way to unlock RACV unable to gain entry. Advised to break the right rear quarter to gain access... $854 later.. Advice is to break driver's or passenger window lot cheaper to replace.

BTW can the dead lock be turned off via VAGCOM? The scary part is if you lock yoursel inside the car without your keys, you can't get out as the door handle or unlock buttons will not allow you to open the doors.

I know there is a release lever inside the warning triagle in the back tailgate but this only works if the battery or locking mechanism has failed. I'm going to buy one of those small glass hammers.

For the Mk6 Golf (2009+, don't know about older ones), if you press Lock on your fob once, the deadlocks are used, but if you press the lock button twice, the car locks without the deadbolts (so people inside can get out).

I don't know of any VCDS settings for this.

Does the car have a hidden door lock on the drivers door ,there's a slot to prize the cover off? If you have a spare key at home ?
If that's not available you might have to break the tail light to gain entry to the boot.

Same problem on the Toyota Kluger

I think as a general rule, never break little windows that don't open...

Wont get into the boot of a Passat (B7 Anyway)through a Taillight Thats for sure.

IF you have a spare key at home you would be able to unlock it with the remote as the remote is the key. IF you PRISE the little cover off you wont get a PRIZE as you will probably wreck it and anyway you need the key that slides into the remote to open it

How would that even be possible without doing something silly though? The deadlocks only operate with the remote - the lock button inside the car doesn't engage the door locks (it doesn't even work when the door is open).

The only possible way I can see to deadlock yourself in is if you pressed the lock button on the key with a door open, then left the key outside, got in, and shut the door.

              And the B6 Passats too.

So far as I can tell, pressing the lock button once locks the doors immediately with deadlock. Pressing the lock button again within about two seconds will then disengage the deadlock.

Yes thanks for the tips guys common sense should have prevailed should have broken the drivers or front passenger windows much easier to replace racv guy was telling me it would be more expensive to replace door windows as the door has to be pulled apart ...

Only takes 20 mins to strip inside of door a bit longer to take the inner skin off as it has rivets holding it on.
Had one of mine apart for a rattle but didnt go right in as I found it before having to go that far

Last time I did that took me about an hour to get it out as with laminated screens they dont just "break".

I smashed it with a hammer then had to cut around seal on edge and literally roll it up to get it all out.

My insurance covers all window glass for breakage.

If you have tinted windows and break the glass, the tint/plastic film will keep the glass together - so would be harder to get into/out of the car.

The only glass not tinted (or with UV protective clear film) on my car is the windshield . . . (would prefer not to be have to find out how to get out of a deadlocked Passat!).

The tinting in the side windows is in the glass if still factory. Only aftermarket tint is applied on inside of glass surface.

Your windscreen actually has a layer of plastic film sandwiched between two layers of glass as do all laminated screens.
That what holds it together after it has been broken.

I had a new screen put in and it had a hand mark on it which we couldnt remove from either inside or outside.

Took it back and it proved to be a worker had put mark on plastic as it was being made

Yes, had tint applied to all my windows (except windscreen) - tint to the driver/passenger and clear UV protective (security) film on the rest (have factory tint on the sports pack)

                            Thanks! Didn't know that.

So gotta to try and avoid locking myself (or anyone else) in the car with no access to the keys!

I think that the rear quarter glass is more expensive to replace because of the heating element.
