My B5 Passat

Hi All ... Im new to the forum ... below is a pic of my ride



Its a nice car ... but its got its fair share of problems.

I brought it over to Sebastian @ Euro**** (sorry seb .. I forgot the rest of the name of your workshop ) where he had a quick look at it and came up with possible problems.

Basically .. its got oil leaking from somewhere. (Assuming its from the half moon gaskets and rear main seal) So I gotta clean up the mess and see exactly where the oil is coming from.

On one hand I wanna sell the car .. and get something like an 06/07 Corolla .. that won't give me problems. (its not going to be a sportivo .. or manual at that )

On the other hand it'll probably cost me to keep ... but I don't want to get a mortgage out to do so. And the question is ... whats the next problem thats going to arise ???

So my question is (Seb has pointed out common problems) what other common problems occur????

phaeton: I have thought about it ... i'd buy a TDI ... cause thats got torque to tow my toys. But the reason for the corolla is its cheap, reliable, and very good resale value. Toyota do make very reliable cars .. my dad has a 86 Corona ... its never had a service ... he just basically puts oil in it to top it up .. he fixes something when it breaks ... and for reasons beyond my comprehension ... it still runs ???? Kinda defies logic .. but very good advertising for Toyota. I've also got a 87 Camry, had it for courier work and is mechanically A1.

1DUB2C: Yep ... 2.8 V6 Synchro (4Motion) with all the goodies ... so U kinda see why I don't want to downgrade to a Corolla

True some Corollas are all of the above but it does not have a special feeling when your in a car park or driving on the road.

A well looked after Golf will still bring you reliability as long as you continue to maintain the vehilce it should run like a clock reliable until battery dies

Welcome mate!! The current prob your having is most likey the valve cover gasket this is prone to going or it will be the gasket for the cam chain tensioner....As with future problems the V6 seems to be more reliable than the 1.8t (from what i have read)....I have had many problems with my B5 but i could never get rid of it....yes the repairs are expensive but if you get hold of a Bentley Manual for your car and u have some knowledge of cars you can save yourself a bit of cash....This site helps a lot also with little problems you may have!

Phaeton: Exactly .. the corolla will have no special feeling about it. It would basically be a machine that goes from A to B. As for the Golf ... if I sell the Passat .. I'm still going to have to fork out extra cash to purchase one ... in that case I would rather fix the passat. On a good note .. there has been no smoke pouring out of the engine bay lately .. my analogy was old oil leaked onto the manifold and it was old oil just buring off.

Sleepy: My knowledge of cars is only so limited. Surely I can do the basic stuff ... but as I have been told the main problems that arise are the technical ones and unfortunately the expensive ones. BTW - I like the TAPASS badge on your car ... did you rearrange the badge or is it photoshopped??

Rearranged very easy to do....honetsly i only have basic knowledge on engines etc but whe u read all different forums etc there is so much help out there..there are some great write ups on "How to" for so many different problems....

I found http://www.passatworld.com/ quite useful. Yank passat owners are nutters... This is a good thing.

Check out the firewall drain holes below the battery. That seems like a major design fault! I was at the Brisvegas motor show last weekend & I notice that the design has changed completely.

ha ha i get a swimming pool in the back floor every winter! i should really get round to it!
