  • Steering Column Lock Error B6 TDI Wagon

Any one had the orange steering wheel come up and vehicle not able to start? Happened three times in the last week, one time in heavy traffic car just shutdown. Each time have managed to re-start after five - ten minutes. Weird thing is that is onyl seems to happen on hills or inclines. Booked it into to Bayford VW Epping ironically it did the same thing again right in the driveway of the service centre and they had to push it in. Thank god for extended warranty again, mine expires in May. Is this another known Passat issue? Will let everyone know what happens.

Yeah, it's pretty common. Basically, there's a module/motor assembly that locks the steering coloumn when you take the key fob out of the dash. It's operated by the immobiliser control module. If the locking pin binds, it wears the motor out, which causes intermittent operation.

They're not too bad to replace, the steering coloumn has to come out, sometimes. Can't remember the price, but a lot cheaper than they used to be, as you couldn't buy the locking module seperate from the column!

Exactly right Umar. They have one in stock so just getting confirmation from Allianz that they will cough up. Also getting another new rear tailight as LED's have died. Have VW changed the design / component so it won't fail again?

I think so, but I'm not 100% sure.

Another update they have changed the module but now it is still not communciating with the immobiliser so car won;t start. They had downloaded a software update and network went down so think file may be corrupt. Have given me a new Jetta 103tdi until they fix.

            Yeah, that can happen sometimes.

There's a bit of a trick to programming them, from memory. One would hope that they've been on the phone to VW Tech support, to sort it out.

sometimes another module needs to be replaced with it, depending what version steering lock was fitted to the car. I think its the body module.

Yeah, I think some of the real early ones needed a new Convenience control module as well.
