MY12 Passat wagon cargo area protection

Hi all,

I picked up my new just over a month ago now, and I've been using a secondary mat to keep the carpet nice, I just thought I'd ask about what liners and protection you guys are using on the inside of your cargo compartments, sedan and wagon.

Also are you utilising to protect the top of your bumper, if at all?

I didn't get the usual accessories girl hit me up after I negotiated the price like you usually do, so I'm unaware at this stage what VW do in a factory accessory, though I plan to ask.

I have the factory Luggage compartment Tray If you buy a VW one make sure you get the rubber one as the cheaper one is only a foam type and corners of boxes etc may go through it I also have a boot mat from Supercrap on top of it.

For the bumper I put 3m paint protection film and NEVER let anyone else put things in the boot.

I just thought I'd ask about what liners and protection you guys are using on the inside of your cargo compartments, sedan and wagon.

I got the foam liner for my 2010 R36 wagon. The shape of the rear bumper and the load compartment is much the same as the 2012 B7, so the accessories should still fit.

The foam liner is thinner than the plastic tray (I had a plastic one in my old Honda). After 2 years, mine's showing a few dings, but no punctures. I carry boxes and equipment around for work all the time. The only negative is that the tray tends to slide around a little bit as you shuffle stuff around on top of it, so I end up with a raised bit near the tailgate, and a gap near the back seats.

As for the bumper lip, I got the stainless steel strip. When the dealer installed it before delivery of my car, they must have polished the bumper prior to installation, as the lip kept lifting. It wasn't until my bumper got replaced after I got rear-ended a year and a bit later before it got re-attached properly. Its been fine ever since though. Just something to bear in mind, that the plate is just held on by what amounts to double-sided tape. Visually, it sticks out slightly against the dark-grey paint, but not offensively so.

All in all, I'm happy with both. Both are VW OEM, but the stainless steel lip protector doesn't appear to be listed in the brochure or the VW website any more.

Look on the link I gave you all the accessories are on that page under different headings Except for the stainless boot protector.

When I asked about prices the clear rear bumper one was $90 Dont know about the aluminium one I seem to remember it being over $150

I think it was deleted in 2010 with the B6 as was in that catalogue but not in my B7 one as I have just looked

The previous model one will fit as the bumpers and tail door are the same

I bought the film and did all door sills and both rear bumpers on the Passat and the Polo for $150

Look at the pics It runs right over the edges and down the face on all of them.

I think the ali one only sits on the top and leaves the edge unprotected which is what tends to get bumped

Hells teeth The film is $60 max for a 300mm wide piece which goes right down the bumper to the chrome strip.

If you buy that make sure its wide enough as the wagon is wider than the car across the boot door.

It is however the same as the previous model as shown as I was going to get the garnish that goes across the bottom of the taildoor but was a bit difficult to fit aftermarket so didnt bother.


My rubber liner for the floor is identical with this one so I think the dealer got it specially as they originally gave me the wrong one and they define them differently in the new catalogue

But will film really protect your bumper from the type of damage an axle end on a bike caused my first bumper? - doubtful, so that's why I went the stainless steel one. Bought it from Reydel VW in US via EBay. Way cheaper than $150, but was 2-3 yrs ago now.

Depends on how careful you want to be I guess I have cream carpet so wont be putting anything dirty in it and certainly not bikes.

Everyone to their own I guess but I didnt buy it to get it dirty.

I load it myself EVERY time to avoid things like that.

That was my thinking too - the film looks good when new, but could yellow as it ages, or peel off. At the very least, the edges of the film will become visible as it accumulates dirt.

If your hand slips as you're loading something heavy into the cargo area, it's all over red rover with the film, whereas with the plate, at worst it will scuff up the metal a bit.

Mine has been on for 18months and it hasnt discoloured or shows any dirty edges.

But then I look after it and use the recommended polish on it every month

The older stuff used to yellow but the newer films dont seem to.


Anything will show wear if you drag things across it instead of lifting it in.
