Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Can OEM Rotors get slots machined?

    Hey I was going to get some slotted RDA rotors for my R36 today but after talking to VolksPower they reckon "They're Sh#t and so are DBAs" in their
    words, not mine. They reckon i'm better off getting good blank Euro rotors and getting the slots machined into them. Anyway I know that the OEM rotors for the R36 are great and I can get them at trade price, only thing is can they get the slots machined into them? I personally think they could but you guys have better knowage when it comes to these types of things. Also does anyone have any feedback as to why RDA's are a poor rotor? I've looked up RDA problems myself and can't findany bad feedback but none were installed on a euro car. DBAs have poor feedback so I won't be buying them. Oh and last off.... Anyone know of a Metal Machinest that will machine in the slots and how much roughly?

    I would imagine it's just not cost effective compared to buying rotors that have slots

      Don't no why DBA are getting bad feedback there perfectly fine. Have had 4000 series rotors ( mostly slotted ) on all types of cars including Dubs. Hard to f**k up a disc rotor. Just stay away from anything drilled. Big risk to slot a rotor IMO. Would really want to know what your doing. Small saving for a big cost if it all goes wrong. RDA and DBA test the crap out of the rotors to make sure there good to go where as Slotting a oem rotor is a unknown.

        I believe DBA and RDA have the same parent company now, but the RDA rotors seem to get better reviews. I have some slotted RDA rotors on a 180SX and they've performed well without incident. Been to the track a few times. Wouldn't be worth slotting factory rotors on your R36. If it isn't done properly they will fail too.

          I have also had RDA slotted rotors on my old MX5 SP - I put them on the car about 8 years ago tracked many times with no problems (1:10's at Wakefield Park) and were still on it when I sold it earlier this year.

          I reckon the difference in the reputations is that DBA did tons of promotion in the "riceboy" magazines and are fairly well known, RDA have kept somewhat in the shadows.

            I have latelly a different experience, 18 months ago I fitted RDA slotted to our Touareg and they distorted badly. The same happen to my T5 where the front discs didn't last 18,000km and I can't say that I'm heavy on the brakes; the Bendix GCT pads got worn only by no more than 2mm during that time.

            I wouldn't buy RDA anymore.

              Cheers for the feed back. Did more research, for the effort of getting OEM rotors machined it's going to cost more, better chance of cracking. Talked to GSL RallySport this morning and ordered the RDA slotted. I searched forum after forum for bad reviews on RDAs but nothing really came up. I suppose I am only getting them for looks more than performance. Transporter, Greg(guy I was talking to from GSL) was saying that if you use a OEM pad or similar, it wears the rotors unevenly causing distortion/warping to the rotor, maybe that's what happened but i'm no expert. I would love to go for cross drilled on the front lunchboxGTI but like you said higher chance of cracking.
