  • R36 black exhaust smoke

I've just brought a 2008 wagon with 60k's on the clock and notice that when I accelerate hard on wot the exhaust seems to blow heaps of black smoke. Its more apparent when its the first wot run and then seems to tailor off after several more runs.

What I want to know is does anyone else notice this? I'm not overly concerned as its probably just the car running a bit rich but seems to be a bit strange maybe the previous owner didn't give it a decent run often enough and there's bit of carbon build up?

Fires anyone know if this engine suffers from carbon build up like some other vag engines?

    Cheers

    Hi mate,

I have a 2009 R36 wagon and i notice the same thing on my car. Interestingly enough - last year i was driving the car very frequently for longer trips - and this year i haven't been driving it infrequently doing short trips and i noticed the black smoke on both. From what I have read its fairly common and not really an issue - just looks bad when you accelerate from the lights and leave a cloud of smoke behind.

It would be interesting to see if people with an ECU tune have noticed a reduction in the smoke? I am also getting a cat-back exhaust early next year but I doubt this will change anything.

Yeah I agree it does look bad. I'll check out some forums to see what's been said.

I know John from dna tuning so will have a chat with him about whether their tune reduces the black smoke.

      Cheers

Fuel smoke out of the back is normal & to be expected. It's the way the FSI system works & has nothing to do with carbon buildup (that's another problem).

Moral of the story - White car should be last choice for FSI owners

So does that mean that our engines are prone to the carbon build also?

Yes- mine does too and it's completely normal.

You will see no difference with a tune. The plus is that it's easy to smoke someone at the lights

                Thanks all for the confirmation.

I would expect a change with a tune as its likely they are adjusting air fuel ratios, etc.

All FSI (Direct injection cars) are prone to carbon buildup, and there is no real solution apart from eventually pulling them apart & cleaning the ports. Catch cans, spray in cleaners etc etc don't have any positive effects as most of the buildup is the recyling of exhaust gasses when you have valve overlap on the exhaust cycle.

Software tune (on these particular types of cars) will not improve it (fuel particle output) - they are already a "lean burn" car, that dumps fuel in (component protection) when pushed hard. A tuner would put more fuel in to cool the components, not burn them out with less fuel

Yes, mine does the black smoke choke as well under heavy acceleration however, I have found a way around it, well mostly... Give it about 70% throttle in 1st then once second clicks in give it even more beans. I find this reduces the black smoke significantly & importantly the car is still moving at a very decent clip....

Thanks guys for all the comments. I'll stop worrying about it and make sure its something that deserves to be smoked when they're behind me

Yeah, it's pretty normal for the black smoke however..........!

When you give the R a bit of stick and you look in the rear vision mirror with the black smoke swirling, I get a cheap thrill knowing you've burned off a few cars behind you...... smokiN!

Sorry, back to the thread now!
