Passat reverse camera

Hey guys,

I've been contemplating installing a RVC badge camera in my R36 sedan. I've seen many tutorials on Golfs and Tiguans but none on the Passat. Has anyone here installed the camera themselves in a Passat sedan? Also been deciding between the highline version (with moving guidlines) or the low line version. Is it much more difficult installing the highline version and where does the extra controller plug into?

Hi,

The highline version is slightly more difficult. The control unit sits behind the trim on the right hand side of your trunk. Camera connects to the control unit and control unit connects to RNS. you also need to connect can bus wiring and power, these can be sourced from the RNS and power from fuse box.

Lowline version is easier that it just connects directly from your badge to the RNS510 and from badge to positive of reverse light so that the badge activates when you are in reverse.

Coding is simply done on rns and the control unit.

The only problem with retrofitting highline version is that I don't think that anyone has successfully calibrated the camera. This certain boards with patterns that are from vw.

As far as proceudre, you can basically take the procedure from the tig or golf and use it for passat but you probably won't need to do something drastic like cutting panels such as what is required in golf v. I have done badge retrofit in golf v so just ask if you have any questions. Obviously, trim will be different but you just figure it out on what trim needs to be removed to access the path for wiring. Just make sure that you use some decent trim tools. Car-Systems have all that you need to retrofit either version, I have purchased various parts of them in the past and their service is great with very fast shipping.

Thanks for your reply Booba, I kinda figured the highline version may be more trouble than it's worth. I have been looking at the carsystems site and their prices seem quite reasonable.

One more question and not sure if it relates to the Passat, which side of the golf did you end up running the cable?

No, but it wouldn't integrate into the oem HU and you would not get the factory auto dim mirror.

Yeah would definately prefer the OEM kit especially with the cool badge camera. Have just purchased from carsystems.pl. Will let you know how it all goes.

G'day mate,

I have done this on my R36 Sedan using gear supplied by Kufatec (Germany) and installed by the lads at my local Autobarn outlet. I coded it using VCDS using the tried and tested "trial and error" method. All works well.

Contrary to what it says about no lines, if you have Park Assist then it has the moving and stationary lines. Only thing I haven't done is get it calibrated by VW but I have found that the closest guide line when lined up on an object or line (as in carpark) is approx 18 inches from the rear bumper.

You will find that the kufatec kit might have static or dynamic, I cannot be sure as I don't know what the kufatec kit is capable of, what i do know is that having park assist won't give you the dynamic lines.

Park assist controller is a separate controller to rvc.

Park assist computer part number is something like 3c8 919 475 A or C, depending on rear or front&rear sensors.
RVC Controller is 5N0907441 or 3AA907441, depending on the donor vehicles (touran or tiguan or something else)

The dynamic lines are added by the RVC controller as it sits between the camera and the RNS. There is no way for the park assist controller to add these. The Kufatec computer controller might add dynamic lines or might just be static, cannot be sure as most steer clear of kufatec controllers as they had massive problems at the start but might have fixed their bugs in recent releases.

Thanks for clearing that up Booba, I'm not a tech so have absolutely no idea what drives what.

Had mine installed for near on two years now and absolutely no problems at. Static lines are displayed in green, dynamic lines displayed in yellow (red danger line). You can split screen with RVC and PA or simply one or the other.

Just finished installing the badge mounted RVC in the R36 sedan. Kit was bought from carsystems.com who were awesome to deal with by the way. Few things which may help anyone contemplating the install. As previously mentioned on this forum the trim removal is a pain. I managed to feed the cable most of the way so didn't have to remove it all.
I had to bend a small lip on the inner boot support in order to have the badge sit flush. No big deal as it was only a few mm. Also realised after I'd wired it all up that the red 12V cable needs to be connected to constant 12V and not ignition as you won't be able to open the boot via the badge with the car off.
If anyone has any questions feel free to ask as without the advise on this forum I'm sure it would have taken me twice as long

I learnt that trick re the constant 12v not two weeks ago. Didn't show up in testing as I had the key in the ignition so had 12v. Only when I tried to open the boot. Plus the camera has a delay and didn't return at one stage

Yeah, what baffled me was that even with the ignition off the first time I tried to open the boot it worked but as soon as the RNS-510 powered off it stopped.

Hey mate, just checking, did the kit come with a drain tube? if not then you will want to make sure that you have that or you migth find yourself with a boot full of water if it rains.
