  • DSG snatchy on take-off

    Hi there

My V6 Highline had about 7,000 kms on the clock when I bought it. The DSG has always been a bit snatchy on take-off. It's not terrible, and I can modulate the throttle and take off smoothly if I'm careful - but if I'm not careful, it can be quite sudden. Once on the move, everything runs perfectly.

Are all V6s like this? I've read there's a software upgrade that can solve the issue. Has anyone done it? and did it make a difference?

    Thanks
    Jim

    It's probably not normal.

Best check with dealer and quote your vin, they can tell if there is a software update otherwise it may need a reset. Its been DSG city for me this week, new dual masses, resets and services, they all come in lots. in all ive found they have been reliable compared to what we get now, hopefully that will be ironed out too. Treat the DSg like a manual as it is essentially, but dont really need to remind you as you sound like you already know that and have had the car a while, im just adding that for the masses I checked a jetta yesterday and it was like that but a lot worse and ive condemmed it. I would have it checked asap, it should never have you fearing a sudden jolt mate

A reset and oil change followed by a bit of driving in manual mode made a huge difference to my 2006 v6 wagon.

I also had a faulty crankshaft sensor at one point. There were no obvious symptoms, it was picked up during service. I swear after it was replaced the gearbox was better behaved. No complaints with mine now.

edit: oops I mean camshaft sensor.

It is not normal. It's new and would be under warranty though - why not just take it to a dealer?

Mine isn't and it has 7000km on it now... i figure it is a manual so i wont roll inch up hills at the lights like all the Camry types... I have accepted the mechatronics unit drives a manual better than I do... I love the box... yours ain't normal... go to the dealership and get the dude in the corner office to go for a spin with you...

(Could it be an autohold releasing issue? Just spekulating)

Thanks for all the comments. It's hard to know what's 'normal' when you've only ever driven one!

I'll take it to the dealer and let you all know.

              Cheers

                Update:

I took the car into the dealer this week and went for a test drive with their road test guy. He drove the car and agreed there was sometimes a noticeable clunk in the transmission on takeoff (not a loud or vilent clunk, but noticeable nevertheless). I left the car with them.

Apparently, the road test guy then drove the car with a VW tecnician and to cut a long story short, they say the clunking sound on takeoff is to do with the auto-hold function and is 'normal'.

I'm certainly not convinced. I've since noticed a similar clunking noise coming form the front of the car when braking and driving over speed humps. It almost feels as though there is something loose in the transmission.

In any case, the car needs to go back for it's 15,000km service soon (it has done 10,000) so I'll keep an eye on it and discuss with them again if I'm still not happy.

Wow, I have never heard VW ever say that a problem is normal.

According to a post on German Passat forum, it's a known problem in some vehicles ("monday car problems" as they call them) and can be repaired under warranty - they put in a new transmission.

Sadly, this is a "normal" or "standard" response from VW.

One other thing. The guy who was a VW technician; did he provide you with some sort of ID or did he issue you with a formal report? They are supposed to.

It is not uncommon for someone from the dealership to pose as a VW technician just to deal with a "difficult" customer. I have been on training courses that teach this technique. After all, you are hardly going to argue with someone who is a VW technician are you.

You have attempted to resolve the matter with the manufacturer (or their representative), so refer the matter to the ACCC. It is the only way that VW will be held to account.

                            Seriously?

Technicians don't wear suits or skirts like the admin/management stuff. They're pretty easy to spot, with their slightly grubby appearance...

Yes. Trust me, dealers are masters at playing "good cop, bad cop". They pull it when you are trying to negotiate a price and they pull it when you have a complaint. I have had someone introduced to me as the senior service manager previously and when it went a level above the dealer, the senior service manager was not one; just one of the other CSRs. I have even had a general office hand introduced as a senior sales manager (who happened to be in on his day off to help out) to push the price of a car alarm up.

It is nothing for a service department to pull someone off the workshop floor and ask them to pose as a VW technician.

Ultimately it is the vehicle owner who wants to have something rectified under warranty, and the manufacturer (through the dealer) who wants to avoid paying for a repair. The moment you met your guard down, you will get caught.
