  • 2008 passat dsg

Hi guys, just bought a 2008 passat tdi and absolutely love it ,what a great car. One question for the masses when I reverse back on an incline it feels as though I have an anchor dragging the car .the vehicle kind of struggles some what as if it is being held back .anyway not sure can someone shed some light on this for me. Thanks in advance. Paul

Ive had a 6sp DSG and currently have the 7sp DSG - they both struggle going backwards uphill. Try using the Auto Hold... or using using your left foot to brake.

My driveway is uphill, so I always park nose out to avoid having to go backwards up the hill.

I think it's a combination of the DSG slipping the clutch to keep the revs up and slight turbo lag. Not as noticable in the V6

Dont use the foot brake as it kills the power. You need to practice a few times and let the car load up in reverse, you will need to use more right foot than you would normally think. It will sound like its revving and slipping, but thats DSG in reverse for you.
If you are holding the car with the foot brake, remember there is a delay with the power coming on, especially in reverse.
Best thing is to find a quiet hill and try a few different tactics. Does take a bit of getting used to.

I have a tricky uphill reverse, with twist between trees and shrub three inch clearance each side, where I have to stop and ensure no pedestrians & skool kiddies wearing walkmans cross whilst looking at their shoes (Emo's )... I find the autohold more of a hindrance than help. At the really slow speed i need to do, if I brush the brakes the car jerks to a stop, then you need to push the accelerator to overcome the auto hold and it shoots back into them there Emo's.

You get used to it... I dont mind the slight forward roll due to not using auto hold...

From what I am hearing I am glad I have the 6spd rather than the 7spd... and the softer torque ramp of the v6 probably suites the box better...

I love this box... it has only stuffed it once, was decelerating to turn onto the cumberland highway, there was a nice big gap until some dude decided to change across two lanes... mashed it to get me out of trouble, and thing launched and hit the RPM limit in first then it was in the fat of the torque curve for second... (Havent hit a fuel cut like that since the first drive after a boost hit to my 98WRX) one second i am almost inhaling the steering wheel, the next I am smacked upside the head by the headrest... ahhh it makes you feel alive!

Normaly it shifts from 1st to 2nd on the button, nice to know it is a little bit human...
