  • 91 Ron Fuel

The sticker on the inside of the fuel filler flap on my my12.5 118tsi wagon indicates that 95 Ron is preferred (appears as large 95) but there is a small 91 next to it. Is this a recent change and can they run on 91? I thought all tsi engines needed 95 minimum?

I should have added that a previous golf I had (mark v) had a large 98 and small 95 combo on the filler flap.

    • Unleaded petrol 98/(95) RON
    Use unleaded petrol 98 RON.

You can also use unleaded petrol 95 RON. However some loss of power is to be expected when doing so.

Use 91 RON only in emergencies.

    • Unleaded petrol 95/91 RON
    Use unleaded petrol 95 RON.

You can also use unleaded petrol 91 RON, but this leads to a slight loss in performance.

    • Unleaded petrol min. 95 RON
    Use unleaded petrol 95 RON.

Use 91 RON only in emergencies.

So according to your fuel filler flap, your car can safely use 91 RON.

I'd still recommend the premium fuel - costs more but your mileage is increased and better performance, better for your engine as well.

Interesting and news to me. Hasn't been publicised by VW and 95 min is always one of the negatives trotted out by the Jap-centric journos who write for many of the newspaper motoring sections.

Most European cars require 95 RON or higher simply because 95 RON is their standard grade of petrol. Not that 91 RON doesn't exist in Western Europe, but it is very uncommon.

Also, the grade of fuel you can use in your VW is dependent on what the label says in fuel filler flap (refer to my post above). Many VW cars in Australia have a "Unleaded petrol 98/(95) RON" or "Unleaded petrol min. 95 RON" label on it, precluding the use of 91 RON.

As for whether 95 RON is worth it - well in Sydney at least, the difference between 91 and 95 is 10 cents per litre (or more)...

You really need to a do few runs on both types of fuel over the course of a few weeks/months and then use Microsoft Excel or something to see what's what.
