  • Recommended Engine Oil

I have read in various threads that VW use a specific engine oil. Does anyone know what it is? Where can I get it (for top ups between services). My car has done 6,000 klms now & going in for an interim service at the start of May but is down about 500 mls of oil. I don't want to be left short betweem services.

BTW, at the interim service I am thinking of getting VW to replace the running in oil with the synthetic stuff they would normally put in after 15,000 klms. What are your thoughts? Is this too early? Is it pointless & therefore wait until 15,000 klm service? I am not comfortable with prolonged high revving the engine with the running in oil.

VW would tell you as long as the oil level is between the min and max marks, you don't need to add any. There's no need to change the oil early either.

Thanks. I am not so worried about it now but would concern me if between 15,000 klm services if the oil was creeping down to the low marker paerticularly mindful under high revs.

I used to have my oil changed every 5,000-7,000 klms previously & understand that oils have come a long way but with the increased heat in engines nowawdays & the tighter tolerances I would imagine that these oils are under more stress. Currently my oil temp gets up to between 100-103 deg.

Any particular brands of oil that are recommended. I have always used Mobil 1 or Motul previously.

The recommended VW standards are in the owners manual. Anything that meets those is ok to use. The car will complain loudly if the oil level drops to a dangerous level.

100 degrees is well within the operating range of a modern oil. It needs to get that hot to prevent moisture from forming in the motor.

I read that driven in the right conditions a 2001 BAM 1.8T engined TT on a longlife servicing could potentially go 20000 miles before going back to a dealer for service.... Thats 32000km.

Admittedly, Australia is a bit harsher than the UK. Your car is new and unless you want to keep it forever, there's no real point firing extra money into it, when there is likely to be no benefit.

Worst case scenario, the engine seizes, VW check your service history, you can prove it was done on time, to their schedule and with approved oil and a VW filter.

They wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

If I had the money to run new cars, I wouldn't be changing the oil any sooner.
