New Passat TDI MY12.5

Hi Guys
I am so close to picking up my 125tdi.
I'll be heading to Melb for the F1 next weekend.
Is there a break in procedure I have to follow?
Ie travel at certain RPM etc

Its in the back of the manual (the bit you dont read until you have had the car for a month) VW has its suggestions... there are three schools of thought, The back of the manual The Eagles (Take is Eeeessy), The fangit (as per Greg Below), and controlled agression (in between)

Not too sure with diesel break in, but the petrol car will shift too early going uphill in D, it will try an idle up a hill at 1200 rpm if it can... drop it in Manual and drive it up with some mid revs.... going down hill keep it in a manual high gear and used the brakes, as (in petrol) it will try engine brake at 5000 - 5500 rpm and this will induce vacuum due to the closed throttle body.... drive it in D on freeways and S through the flat twisties not soft or hard. M on the up hills and down dales.

But remembering that a diesel is "quality" governed (fuel ratio) rather than "quantity" governed (volume of air) there may be a difference to how its done (no trad throttle body for starters)... I'd post the question into the diesel section...

It's the same deal as petrol, you want high combustion pressure, but to avoid high revs. You need a lot of load in too tall a gear, so hills, lots of flat out from low rpm in third, really make it work, but back off before it revs out. I took a day trip through the hills, and spent the time making it haul big gears with the foot to the floor, and upchanged before it went over 3-3500rpm. You want high throttle but low speeds if you get my meaning.

It's always about forcing the rings against the bore, which needs peak combustion pressure, but to avoid revs to allow the tranny, driveline etc to bed in. Go easy on the brakes too, people often think they need to drive fast to bed a car in "hard" but speed has nothing to do with it, making the engine work real hard is what it is all about. Hell, find a heavy trailer to lug around!!

Diesels also don't really totally bed in for tens of thousands of KM's, but the first 500kms is pretty important if you want the very best bed in you can get. I made a weekend of it.

Anyway one question..there a plastic kinda deflector under each wheel guard..Is that meant to be there??

I have them (and like them)... have a feel underneath the guard.. notice how hard they rolled the guards as well? the wheels are really tracked out...

Best to now enjoy the car and have a look at the owners manual also.

As for the mirror, check out the convinience features in your MFD.
As for the headlight washers, it generally comes on every 5th wash of your windscreen if I remember correctley.

By the way don't get me wrong, questions are all good, thats how we learn!

I can't seem to see the mirror down option for reversing.

on the golf GTI, the mirror controller must be set to "L" and then the adjustment is made to the dipped position when you have it in reverse. Ie. set the desired mirror position in P or D or N for forward motion, and set the desired position for rearward motion in R. then leave the selector in "L" for it to dip when reversing. NB, this means that the defogging feature will not work as you move the selector away from that.

That is what they are deflectors & possibly even rub guards. All V6 Passat sedan & wagon have them as standard equipment due to the 18" wheels. Passats ordered with the sport pack also have the guards/deflectors due to the 18" wheels.

As entice said, leave the side mirrors adjustment knob turned to the left position. When you select reverse it automatically drops if the mirror adjustment knob is in the L position. You can set the desired position the mirror drops down to by going through a procedure I don't recall right now. I'll look at the manual later & advise.

You have the bi-xenon so you will have the auto folding mirrors.. There is another position on the left side of the adjustment knob for that feature but is an extra turn. Forget that for now....

Get that manual out & study it mate, all the info is there....
