  • oil indicator light

Recently my passat 118 tsi (MY12) shows the oil indicator light on starting. It persists but goes away once on the go.
It has done just over 8000kms, so about halfway to service.

I took it to the vw service centre, and the chap told me it's normal to have to top up oil. They put in about 400mls.

However, the oil light still comes on. It also comes on when I brake on a steep slope, suggesting the sensor is kicking in when the oil level moves. I'll check the oil level later (my wife's using the car).

Should I be concerned about anything? I haven't noticed any oil under the car to suggest a leak.

    Have you checked the oil?

check it before you start it in the morning (not on a slopeetc only on level ground).

I was reading somewhere that it is normal for modern cars to consume oil, especially VW's (SMH a few days ago)

My advice: Buy oil and do an oil change yourself. this way you know how much oil is in there when it all comes out. the manual says how much oil you need, plus its usually better for your car if you do between service oil changes (think high performance vehicles needing oil changes every 5k and not 15k)

This is what I would have thought as well. My R36 started throwing 'check oil level' warnings as well, but whenever I checked the oil, it was always at least halfway up the 'normal' range on the dipstick.

When I took it into the dealership to have it checked, the tech said that the oil level was indeed on the low side, and needed topping up. He told me that I should be checking the oil level with the engine hot, immediately after turning the ignition off, before the circulating oil has a chance to drain back into the sump. That conflicts with what I've always been taught, but since he topped it up, no more 'check oil level' warnings.

That's what I've heard too, but having a modern engine consuming so much oil that it requires topping up between services isn't ideal. My previous Accord Euro never used a drop.

But kleung, Hondas are Hondas! I'd personally be doing the in between oil change as then your certain on the amount of oil used when you drop your old oil.

Dood, no idea mate, ask your dealer what they use/d for your car.
