  • (2.8 V6 Passat) Can I replace a dual mass flywheel with a single mass flywheel?

I've recently purchased a 2000 V6 Passat and I just completed a cam belt change so the next job is the clutch. Once I had the gear box off I notice the flywheel had some hot spots and I wanted to know if I can replace the dual mass flywheel with a single mass flywheel?
    Cheers Pat

Would anyone know of a good place to find a cheap replacement in Geelong?

I'd recomend you check out some of the UK or Euro based forums for info on alternative flywheels.

Maybe try Imparts but they are expensive if you can't get trade discount.

Also, direct email some of the VW specialists on this forum - every one is on holidays at the moment, hence poor response to your question

Try 034 motorsport, I think their 2.7 kit will fit.
also NGP racing, mjm autohaus, valeo clutches & ECS tuning

Not sure by what you mean as a cheap replacement but I doubt you'll get much change from $1300

I've tried Imparts and they said it would be March before he'd see one, VW priced one up at $3340, Clutch and Brake specialist was $1450 so I'll have a look at a few that you've listed.
        Cheers Dude.

Found a supplier in the states called South Bend Clutches that can do a solid flywheel and heavy duty clutch delivered to Australia for $1300

Anyone know if these solid flywheel conversion will cause idle clatter?

Not to my knowledge. I've had a few mates on another forum I'm on that have done DMFW to solidFW conversions on their Subarus & they didn't report any issues at idle. All of them said that they can't work out why mfrs fit DMFWs. One even changed the order on his SV6 Commodore from manual to auto when he discovered the SV6 was DMFW as he'd had so much trouble with the DMFWs in both his Subarus.

The biggest difference is you have to "learn" how to release the clutch more smoothly at take off & gear changes as there is no longer a damper.
