  • R36 replacement, anyone in the know?

    Hi All,

sadly my R36 is going to a new home in the coming weeks and I'm stuck.

VW have no information (or won't say) as to whether a direct replacement is coming and I won't go the soft**k version.

Golf R is too small (and I've already got a Gti anyway )

Does anyone working in VW that checks these forums know if an R36 replacement is coming? pm me if you like and it'll be our little secret ! I need to know before I change brands but I'll hold out if it's a "in 6 month's" thing.

thanks in advance and mum's the word if need be (or Jag's the word if it need be I guess)

Don't mind the look of the new Skoda's but doesn't quite cut it against the VW versions for me.

Had a bad experience with Audi so they're out.

Got my answer from a tech at VW today. No R36 replacement now or ever so time to move on.

          cheers

                Hey All,

Very old thread but it's taken me this long to stop googling and start buying !
I decided, despite my prior comments, to take the punt, forgive and forget ( well forgive at least) and put my hard earned down on the new Audi A5 facelift Sportback 2.0 TFSI Quattro ( say that when you're tanked)
I opted for the S-Line in Daytona Grey Pearl with the 19" Titanium Rotors and bits and pieces that nobody needs but everybody wants I guess. Here's hoping my experience this time round is a happier one than the last.
I considered the facelift CC but ran out of patience waiting so...ironically...now starts the 4 month wait !

I'm in the same boat early next year with VW not giving me any info.
I want sedan as a wagon is not necessary for me
When I bought the R36 I selected it over and above a CC and the A5 Sportback (mainly due to the cost of Audi options)
I think it's terrible that VW has left R36 owners in this position with no larger R model car to update to.

So the likely contenders for me are
The new 3 series BMW ,
A4 3.0TDI chipped to 221kw/610Nm (stock 3.0TDI is lineball with the R36 in acceleration stock anyway )
                  S4

                  So up yours VW

I know there not doing a R36 as such agin but i thought VW where going to do R line for all there vehicles in the near future. The golf has it, Polo in germany has it now and spreading.

To be honest if I was in such a position I'd be opting for a move to Audi, have always found Audi Centre Brisbane to be fantastic, down to the point where they have helped me with advancing my career and knowledge of marketing for my uni degree. And Audi's are just delightful to sit in and very nice to drive! An S4 or second hand RS4 or S3 would be one of the only cars other than an R that I would move from the R32 when the time comes.

Agree wholeheartedly. I still think the R36 was the best value for money car sold in Australia but I guess worldwide demand may have played a part? maybe the yanks couldnt deal with a humble VW with performance to match or exceed Audi? who knows.
Before I decided I drove the facelift BMW 335i and came away bitterly disapointed. Journos spank on about "vague steering" whenever they talk Audi well I can tell you the 335's steering is so disconnected it's scary. The interior build was also rubbish compared to VAG, plasticky center console and cheap looking dash so I put it in the " no thanks" bin. Goes like the proverbial in a straight line though but 8 speed slushbox isn't a patch on DSG.
I drove the 3.0TDI A5 but having never owned a diesel I kept expecting another 2000 rpm before upshifts. I also found it too nose heavy and it tended to understeer like my old B6 Quattro used to.
To me the 2.0 TFSI ticked all the boxes. Better balanced, revved it's heart out like it does in the Gti and I don't mind the extra .7 of a second to a 100 vs the diesel. I still think this engine is brilliant whether in a VW or with the extra torque in an Audi. It'll never sound like an R32 or R36 and the 7 speed dsg..oops, sorry "sportronic" doesnt have that fantastic braaaarp on the VW version but look at the thing !
I couldn't go past the awesome (to me) looks, huge boot, even better interior and funky drl's.SOLD.
