  • 07/08 Passat Problems

    Hi all
I am looking at purchaing a 07/08 tdi passat
and after reading a number of threads I am concerned at some of the faults that are popping up and the cost of repairs.
Most of the cars I am looking at have close to 100000kms or more on the clock. Most of the issues discussed here seem to pop up well before the cars have reached this number of kms

is there anything i need to look out for after the 100000km mark apart from the timing belt

I do less than 15000kms a year. and i dont turn cars over oftern so i would be looking atleast a 5 to 8 years before purchaisng again

    any help would be appreciated

Servicing is quite pricey every 60,000klms. The timing belt is around $400 for the complete kit, with around 4 hours labour.

Other common problems are mostly injectors (7 year warranty on these now), electronic parking brake switches, and electronic steering column locks.

      thanks for the info

is the 7 year warranty from the build date of the car and is it transferable to the next owner?

Going to a good independent VW specialist mechanic will get you cheaper andpotentially better servicing.

On the injectors themselves, I believe. If they've been replaced, the warranty starts over on them.

Opinions and experiances tend to vary on that one!

Being dealership-based myself, I've seen the good, bad, and the ugly from both.

the pump injector (pumpe duese) units tend to let go one most of the 2.0 TDI ones...they about a grand each.
plus the wiring loom for the units itself which is about 260 dollars I believe, that needs to be replaced, cause its the one causing the mess
the hand brake switch also causes some headaches sometimes...cant remember the price
the 125kw 2.0TDI also tends to suffers from a loss of power which is fixed by a software update for ur engine ecu... it does not cure the lack of power tho...
i probably missed a lot, but these are the ones I had to deal with the most.
            Regards

Pretty sure it's 7yrs warranty from new not from when replaced.

so it is fixed by a software update for ur engine ecu, or it does not cure it? I'm confused

Yeah customers are not happy about it, only the 125 are affected somehow, and after update its not really better

Thanks for the info. Are these issuses surrounding the diesel engine more than the actual model ie passat or jetta

Fair call. My perspective is based on my local indie, which is excellent and my local dealer, which charges like a wounded bull and is so-so.

So is it worth the risk to purchase one of these cars or should I look at other cars of other brands?

that depends on what interests you Twiggy - and how much you want to spend. Personally, you can't go past a Honda for reliability. I've had them in the extended family for over 20 years and everyone has been excellent (except for the Integra that had electrical problems and would refuse to restart when it was hot, then the first Accord that kept refusing to start when it was cold, then the later Accord that had 2 main ECU's, an auto ECU, coil packs, new transmission - all before it had travelled more than 90k's, then auto Civic that also destroyed it’s transmission! But how about a Hyundai or Kia? No problems? How about blown transmission, throttle bodies, interior trim falling apart and bad paint jobs. But the 2011 models are now terrrific - according to the ever reliable, highly knowledgeable and most importantly 'independent' Aussie journo's - if I had a dollar for every Hyundai or Kia that Will Hagen has recommended, I'd have more money than him I’m sure).

I'd be driving them all, that would tell me what I wanted. But whatever brand you buy, if it goes pear shaped, you'll regret it and wished you had have listened to everyone on all the forums. If goes well, you'll be wondering what all fuss was about (which is most people's experience across all the brands- except for those early dreadful korean models). Good luck

What a great post clip.bloody awsome.

Most of the vw's I have been looking at are either passat's or jetta's with the diesel engine
The only other car that comes to mind is the mondeo diesel all are around the $20k with most having 100k km on them

This has been the hardest choice of car ever always had ford falcons before this but want to buck the trend of the petrol motors ( I must be showing my age or a mid life crises)

Went from a Falcon to a Passat. Significant upgrade. Will never go back. Same would apply to Jettas. Economy and torque of the diesel. Safety features. Finish and general build quality. Lovely.
