  • R36 Wagon - 2009 / 2010 (2009, 2010 build) questions re 2nd hand pricing

Apologies if I've posted this to the wrong area.

I'm in the market for a 'newish' car after selling my previous 156 (kitted of course!).

I drove the R36 wagon some months ago prior ot the decision to discontinue it on the basis I would get a new one with all the options I wanted in 2011 as did not want to buy 2nd hand and compromise.

    well that ended quickly.

So I find myself looking at the approx 10 or so R36 wagons on the carsales / carpoint website.

I discount the 2008 (no offense intended) and looking at the MY09/MY10 builds.

there seems to be a wide price gap even with builds in the same year and similar kms.

Ideally I'd like RNS510 with sat nav and RVC (my wife needs the RVC - christ shes needs a bit more but I'm probably offending people on here so I'll stop), and auto tail gate.

I'm taking one out for a test drive tomorrow in Melb (I'm down here on work and actually came down and staying longer with direct intent to see this car, work takes secondary...). There are more wagons in VIC then NSW so naturally I'm here.

What I'd appreciate from you is to know (and i understand the concept of what the market will bear etc) is aside from the red book prices are the current prices on carpoint a little high in some cases and about right?

I think the 2009 should be going for approx $52-$54k (if kms are under say 35k) and fractionally more (say $56-58k) for the 2010 with kms under 15k.

OR am I being a complete prick?

I can't bring myself to buy a CX-7 - which is what my wife thinks I should get, but knows I'll just drive it so hard it will krinkle.

    Cheers

    The prices are about right.

However, the past few weeks there have been 'desperate' sellers who are under valuing their R36s just to get a quick sale.

Not just R36s. The used car market is bleak (for sellers) right now.

The basic R36 drivetrain (3.6l 220kw/350nm V6, AWD, 6sp DSG) lives on in the Passat V6 Highline. So that is an option, depending on your budget.

I discount the 2008 (no offense intended) and looking at the MY09/MY10 builds.
There were a number of updates in 09/10, but most of the updates were for the other models. Aside from the new instrument cluster with the white MFD and the introduction of the standard RCD510, the R36 hasn't changed a great deal from 2008 onwards.

Ideally I'd like RNS510 with sat nav and RVC (my wife needs the RVC - christ shes needs a bit more but I'm probably offending people on here so I'll stop), and auto tail gate.
The RNS510 is readily available on Ebay and as I understand it, is not difficult to fit. You will need som VAG-COM-fu to get it integrated properly though.

Given that there is no longer an R-badged model in the Passat range, the R36 is probably somewhat collectable now. That may push 2nd hand prices up a bit.

I can't bring myself to buy a CX-7 - which is what my wife thinks I should get, but knows I'll just drive it so hard it will krinkle.
Chalk and cheese. Be prepared to pay through the nose for fuel for the CX-7 - heavy softroader body, smallish turbo engine...unless you go for the diesel model.

I love the write up re the MY10 Wagon, "loaded with options" should read, only one option - sat nav. and "Rare electric roof" should read Sunroof - like all white R36's

It's a great car and at the second hand prices a bargain IMO. Nothing will come close.
Unfortunately for me I'll be leaving R36 ownership for another marque soon because of VWs insane decision to delay a replacement but I digress.
Good luck, you won't regret buying an R36.

Hence why I was "forced" into a very quick sale of my 2009 R36 white wagon at the beginning of March. I went into a VW dealer and asked about the new Passats and when the new R or R36 would be available and they said it would be 18months to 2 years after the standard Passat's release in April. This meant that I would have had to keep my current R36 for a total of 4 years and about 100,000kms, so I aksed if there were any current R36 wagons available and the salesman told me they could lay their hands on the last new one in Oz, a Icelandic Grey wagon. He gave me an excellent trade on my white wagon and I purchased the Icelandic Grey, so, I'm set until the new R or R36 arrives.

Ok guys, I have secured a BB 2009 R36 Wagon from Melb. Good deal and am happy. Actually exstatic (sic) to say the least. Very low kms and immaculate condition.

Pick it up Friday 13th - which is lucky for me. Drive from Melb to Sydney over two days which I'm looking forward to of course.

Now just need to at some stage look to figure out how to undertake an upgrade of the standard stereo - keeping the sat nav system but building out amp and speakers (but that's my youth recollection talking).

I will need to figure out what to do to get my iPod to be able to be used via the RNS as the connection module (option I believe) does not come with the car -so pointers would be nice.

                      Yeah !!!!

At least the R36 drivetrain lives on in the V6 Highline, even if it doesn't have the same suspension, seats, or blue-needle instrumentation...

Hah. Friday 13th. Hopefully that's not an omen. FWIW, Chinese consider the number 13 to be very lucky. Make sure you spend plenty of time exploring all the nooks and crannies on the road between Melbourne and Sydney. Don't forget the Beechworth Bakery!

Now just need to at some stage look to figure out how to undertake an upgrade of the standard stereo - keeping the sat nav system but building out amp and speakers (but that's my youth recollection talking).
Considering that a Dynaudio factory audio upgrade is available, while using the same head units, I suspect that the RNS510 probably has line level outputs on the back, going to an outboard amp. If that's the case, it should be trivial to upgrade the speakers and amp. If not, the worst case is that you use line level converters to connect an aftermarket amp.

I will need to figure out what to do to get my iPod to be able to be used via the RNS as the connection module (option I believe) does not come with the car -so pointers would be nice.
It is possible to buy the MDI unit from eBay, and as I understand it, it is just plug and play into the existing cabling. $200-ish IIRC. I have the MDI in my R36, but I just have a 4gb USB flash disk permanently connected. CBF pulling my iPhone out each time I get in the car.

Given that you have a 30gb hard disk in the RNS510 already, using this may be a more convenient solution. Or if you don't like that, there's also the SD card reader - just pick up a cheap SD card from anywhere, and chuck your music on that. Just be aware though that older revisions of the RNS510 only support up to 2gb SD cards. Newer revisions support larger cards.

Congratulations on your purchase, just picked up my new R36 too. You'll love it, and if you're coming from a non-euro, you'll probably share my frustration/humour in the indicator stalk position.........windscreen wipers don't exactly communicate the intention to turn imminently

The Syd-Melb drive is long but easy, I never explored just did it in one hit every time, so if you can take your time over 2 days you should have some fun.

Many thanks kleung - good information and 'sound' idea re the MDI and after market amp etc. I'll just take my time in any case. Love the '13' commentary as well!!

R36FTW - did you buy wagon or sedan? Yes the idea is to take it slow (actually sweetening the deal by taking my wife to Dalesford for Friday night so I'm sure there are few roads I can at leasat explore while she is having whatever treatments she's booked up on my credit card!

                            Cheers to all.

                              No worries.

One more thing, if the manual supplied with the '09 is anything like mine, you'll find it fairly lacking in detail. Spend a bit of time reading up on this forum to learn about stuff that the manual doesn't cover (or is flat out wrong) - like the cruise control lever operation. Something you'll probably want to know how to use before hitting the road for your Melbourne->Sydney jaunt.

Hint: the Passat's cruise control has an extra feature that most other cruise control systems don't - the ability to round up or down to the next nearest 10km/h. You can use this function while the cruise control is active, or you can use it to preset a new speed while it is inactive.
