I'm in a similar predicament actually.

I want to add a tow bar to my R36 wagon to tow a 6x4 trailer on occasion, but have no idea what the most cost effect option is?
I believe Best Bars in NZ make the ADM tow bars, but you can also buy genuine VW towbars in UK which have a higher tow ball rating.

Anyone here retro-fitted a tow bar after purchase?

It should, theoretically, be cheaper to do it later on. You'll be able to get a better price through the service department, as you're effectively dealing direct. Otherwise what happens is the service department charges the sales department, who puts their mark-up on it, then charges you.

If it's a lousy job, and it happens from time to time, take the car back and have it sorted.

I've fitted a few on cars that have been with the owner for some time. Only difference to me is the overall cleanliness of the vehicle. I prefer to work on them before the owner takes them down every dirt road in the district

            For all B6's?
            Got part numbers?

            Thanks.

              I believe so.

I didn't bother getting part no's from my contact at Camberwell VW parts, after hearing this price even at trade price, I kind of lost interest in the project.

Any idea if we can just bring one in from the UK?

                  Not ADR-approved.

Not worth the headache if it's related to an accident.

                      Hi guys,

I got a towbar installed for $900 from ironbull.com.au. He imports towbars and wiring kits from the UK and installs them himself.
He's based in Qld but travels interstate when he gets a few people wanting installs from the same state.

The towbar is a swan neck type towbar and has a quick release to remove the arm.

Looks like his website isn't working so there's no pictures.

Are they ADR compliant with an Aussie standards label on them. If not I wouldnt touch one with a barge pole as the implications of an insurance claim may not be worth it.

Can you post some pics of the install mate?
Mostly showing how the cut out looks visibly from the rear?

These are OEM VW Germany standard equipment tow bar manufactured by Westfalia, higher in quality, design and safety than our 'Best Bar NZ/Hayman Reese' equivalents and a hell of lot more attractive too!

Compared to half the modifications of aftermarket parts people run on their cars that aren't ADR or roadworthy, a tow bar is the least of your worries considering the high quality VW Europe standard
