  • Resale on the Passat - any experience?

I am considering changing cars over and wonder what others have sold their Passat for recently. Looking at CarSales it seems that high 20's is about the going price for a MY08 wagon at the moment.

If you've sold recently I'd be interested in the sale price, km, and car spec.

You'd be lucky to get low $20'sK now on carsales. My trade offers ranged from $16.5 - $17.5K from VW dealers however I managed to get $19K on my Volvo and my balloon on the CHP was under that so I wasn't disappointed.

Just begun looking at replacing my current 2011 B7 125TDI Passat sedan. Had a serious look at the new top sec Mazda6 Atenza and they initially offered me $27,000 for my Passat. After a lot of haggling, they offered $30,000. Initial changeover price was $24,000, but I haggled it down to $21,000. Guess what? I've still got my Passat!

Nothing particularly wrong with the new Mazda6. The test drive demonstrated that this is most definitely a dynamically accomplished car, but not dramatically better than the Passat. Anyway, I'll be checking out the Volkswagen CC later this week. Will be interesting to see how much a VW dealer will offer me for my Passat though. Who knows? I might end up with another Passat albeit a MY13 including sports package, electric seats and Dynaudio.

            Time willl tell .....

You must be rich! Why would you trade-up the same car when yours is barely over 1 year old. The depreciation is highest the first year!

But if you insist, I would suggest going private sell. You should be able to get $30000 privately, then haggle another $5500 off the new car. That way you can view as having your car traded in at $35000 and make you feel good.

Let's just say investing in properties, managed funds and a lot of hard work always pays off!

The B7 Passat was released in April 2011, so my car will be 2 years old shortly. I've already had that nasty first year depreciation hit. Hence, why I'm sussing out the situation now.

VAG newbie, I don't think you read my post properly as the Mazda dealer offered me $30,000 trade-in for my Passat. On that basis, I would assume that I could get approximately $34,000 - $35,000 via private sale. Not sure any car dealer would be willing to knock off $5,500 off a new car to a regular buyer. Of course, there's always car brokers, which I think you've recommended in the past. Let's see how I go shall we? My aim is to improve on my current Passat and there are quite a few interesting choices out there.

How's your Skoda Superb going? I remember you had something happen to the windscreen and you've had some issue with installing a reversing camera. Let me tell you, I really enjoyed test driving the Superb. All thing's considered it's equal to the Passat except that MY13 Passat has Sat-Nav and RVC as standard at a more competitive price point than that currently offered with the Superb.

When Mazda offered you $30,000 trade in, did they knock off any thing from the RRP? If not, then they are not really offering you $30000 for your Passat, but rather they have added whatever allowance they have on the new car price into your trade in price. As many will say, the change over value is what counts.

See if you are entitled to corporate discount. For Passat, expect $5500-6000 off RRP even if you don't use a car broker. I work for QLD health, and the dealer told me I should expect about $5800 off the RRP. (I was quoted $54500 drive away for the Alltrack, optioned with Adaptive Cruise Control, Visibility & driver's assistance package, MP, and park assist 2, and that was before any negotiation!)

How's your Skoda Superb going? I remember you had something happen to the windscreen and you've had some issue with installing a reversing camera. Let me tell you, I really enjoyed test driving the Superb. I made some comments on the Superb thread. I love the Superb. I might seem a bit p**sed off in my comments on VWa, it's because I love my Superb, yet VWa has dines its best to make sure Superb is not a perfect car.

The windscreen was replaced. No trouble, although I recently had a little chip on the windscreen after a piece of pebble hit it on the freeway. You just can't avoid these kind of nuisance.

Most of my RVC issue has been sorted. It integrate with the OPS so well that you can't tell it's 3rd party. The only time you would know its 3rd party is that it occasionally would not show the image, and turned into rainbow color bars. I've had my unit taken apart by a fellow forum user here, he reckon my dealer ripped me off by putting the wrong video module (a module that is designed for Playstation rather than RVC). He reckons if I use a genuine VW RVC it will be fine.

However, at the time it wasn't an option. VW didn't offer RVC in 2011-2012 after the Tsunami in Japan. So I had no choice.

I went back to the dealer hoping they can solve the issue. Turn out to be big mistake, they ruined all my VCDS coding. I had to get the same fellow forum user to fix it for me.

I would say, at this stage, Passat and Superb are about equal value for money. Passat has more equipment for the money, but Superb is bigger and more luxurious.

I am hoping that by the time when my lease is due, there will be face lifted superb available, and that RVC plus will be included, plus many advanced safety feature like City EB & ACC on the Passat will be available for Superb.

Mazda definitely didn't budge on the $51,000 RRP with the top spec petrol Mazda6 Atenza. You're absolutely right about the importance of the changeover price. They initially wanted a changeover of $24,500 and after a lot of haggling where I cited I'd pursue a private sale of my Passat that would offer a better monetary return, the dealer principal actually walked over to me, sat down and made a final offer with a changeover price of $21,000. He even wanted me to sign a sale contract for the Mazda and adjust accordingly depending on what I did with the Passat. I absolutely refused as I said to them from the start that I wasn't willing to go above a $20,000 changeover and that I owed it to myself to see how much I could get for my Passat via private sale. Besides, as good as the new Mazda6 is, it's not necessarily better than either the Passat or Superb. It really boils down to a different design aesthetic and driving experience when comparing German and Japanese cars.

I'm afraid I'm not eligible for a corporate or fleet discount, but it'll be very interesting to see how I go later this week with VW as I want to check out the CC very carefully.

I believe there is a new Superb on the way, so let's hope Volkswagen Australia do the right thing with such a fine car.

The Mazda6 will be hard to bargain at this stage as it is relatively new. I'm also looking at getting one for my wife's next car. Most likely the Atenza wagon diesel. Even with fleet discount, I could only get $2500 off. ie. $52500 for the red Atenza diesel wagon. My wife loved it, but I'm just waiting a bit for it to become more negotiable.

This means whatever the Mazda dealer offered you is the price that they think they can achieve by selling your Passat themselves rather than give it to a whole seller. If they weren't gonna give more, it probably means they have no faith to sell your car for more than $30,000, and they might risk losing money. This should give you some idea.

I doubt VW can offer you more. Anything more simply means VW is more negotiable in new car price. You should be able to get a very good deal on a stock car (but beware, it will be 2012 built), but not a lot if you have to factory order.

Mazda6 is definitely a very good car. But at that price, personally I prefer the Passat wagon for being more spacious, my wife liked the Mazda6 as its more refined. Will see if the price will drop further.

IMO, the Passst, Superb and Mazda6 are the top 3 in the market for medium/large car class. Whatever you choose will always be a good choice.

Some additional points. Thought it might interest you. My leasing company was able to obtain a discount of $3671 on the petrol Atenza. This brings the GST excluded drive away price to $45869 (novated lease don't pay GST). You should be able to achieve a fleet discount using car broker.

I recently sold my 18month old B7 125TDI sedan with18000k's. Finally priced it at $33900 and it sold to first person who saw it, no negotiation, and had two other serious buyers lined up. Either too cheap or right on the money. It was in absolutely new cond though.

VAGNewbie is right that a car broker would be the most cost effective way to get into a new car; however, I went the traditional route and put down a deposit for a MY13 125TDI Highline Sedan with the Sport Package at a Volkswagen dealer. After the Mazda dealer who tried to use high powered sales tactics on me, it was a huge relief to end up at Kevin Dennis Volkswagen in Deer Park, Victoria. Without any haggling whatsoever, the DP immediately offered me $30,000 for my current Passat, knocked off $2,500 from the RRP on the new Passat with Sport Package, threw in mud flaps, full tank of diesel and free vehicle inspection at 5,000ks.

I might also add the service department at Kevin Dennis Volkswagen correctly diagnosed a wheel alignment issue with toe-in on my current Passat that two independent tyre shops ignored and failed to rectify.

im reviving an old thread, but thought would be better than starting a new one.

have you guys experienced a low resale value since the Media reported faults with the DSG and its engines as a result of the car accident that killed a woman. Now i know the story, the accident was not due to any fault with the car it was simply an accident however im finding regardless of what the reasons were the damage has already been done.

Im selling my car now and trade ins are rediculous and private sales are not any better, and all messages i get through email or sms are crazy...all about the problems VW have and trying to reduce my price and hardly any enquires about the car. They go straight to the negatives based on what they have heard on the Media.

its very frustrating, because i found it to be a one of the best cars i have owned so far so i have nothing but praise but its hard to pass that on to buyers.

if you have sold your passat recently i would be keen to know what you have experienced, although the R36 is different all together.
im talking more about your bread and butter passats TSI TDI etc..

Just my story, didnt trade as its worth more than that to me
