Do any of the other Passats get the Sports suspension or is just the R36?

It is interesting you mention that.

I have been considering selling, and was looking at probable value of the car.

Redbook etc. value it low $40's but on carsales there is only 1 MY08 R36 Wagon with more km's and less options at a dealer for $58k - allowing for 15% markup by the dealer compared to private sale, that leaves me around the $50k mark....

I think given the lease expires June 2011, it would be better selling whilst it is still the "current" model, early next year.

As for a collectors item, not sure - if the new V6 highline can do all the R36 can do, unlikely this one will retain its value better than any other car. It does say a R model will be 2 years away, which makes sense given the R36 appeared a long time after the current passat was released.

Doesn't that quote contradict this quote from the same article?? "The new generation Passat is due to arrive in Australian showrooms in the first half of next year -- and there will not be an R model to accompany it. The lack of a Passat R36 is in line with VW's move away from the 'R' branding, as we reported a few months ago."

I'd be very surprised if VW moved away from the R-badge, because of the cult-like following it has built up, coupled with the existing demand for the vehicles. I suspect it's more due to tightening pollution regulations in Europe that are forcing manufacturers to become more innovative and build cleaner hi-po engines, hence VW's move to smaller displacement engines coupled with forced induction.

That's what i was thinking! But you're right, alot of these changes seem to stem from emissions quotas in Europe...shame really....unless they come out with a 3.0 Supercharged R borrowed from the current S4???

Woah, that's a potent little sucker. 250kw/450nm out of a turbo 2.5 litre. Or, do we prefer a twin-charged 3.0 litre V6 making 245kw/440nm? Decisions, decisions.

With output numbers like these, who needs V8s?

Sports Passat will continue | hybrid model

Only the TTRS's 2.5 I5 turbo makes a sound worthy of a replacement to the VR6. Somehow I doubt that engine would find its way into the VW range though... but only time will tell.

We all know they'll continue the 'R' model in the Passat line-up. It was (is) such a big seller for this lineup and will continue on. They're just trying to scare enthusiasts to help clear current stock levels and to keep prices at the highest margins possible.

It'll be an awesome car however it comes. Should generate more power and torque and hopefully a few more options...

It makes sense, though. In the TTRS it pumps out something like 335hp - if they're keeping the 3.6 V6 for top end non R models, the 35hp (or more) difference could work well as the distinction....
