I'm not the angry one if you're referring to me with the more wine suggestion, which, I hasten to add, is a good one!! Looks like passatpout has had a similar experience which I can sympathize with.

For me, the part arrived yesterday and VW Roadside Assist are dropping the car back in a couple of hours from Moss Vale.

Not angry with anyone, just backing up my original opinions with facts from my experience.

Mind you, the other half's been away for a few days....

Yes, I have had a similar situation and been left disappointed by the car... Just about every fault that people have posted on this forum, I've experienced - jerky gearbox, park brake, injectors - as well as a few other idiosyncrasies and faults such as the trailer lights, cupholders broken on delivery, corrosion, etc, etc.

Back in June, we were thinking that next year we'd trade the Passat like for like, and get a Jetta or gold wagon for my wife. We would now need a lot of persuading to even consider VW again...

I'm still rather puzzled by the focus on absolute reliability in this thread. Sure, you tend to expect better reliability with more expensive cars but you still see plenty of broken down Mercs and Beemers so occasional breakdowns are to expected. Particularly troublesome cars, like passatpout's, are more worrying but we are talking about mass produced items with multiple complex systems, unlike trains which are produced in much smaller runs with more extensive predelivery checks/corrections and where functionality tends to be separated, so the occasional "Monday morning car" is a lottery that someone will be unfortunate enough to be hit with.

The backup network is the bigger issue to my mind - not carrying more than I set of spares for a component that is used in multiple models across multiple brands, no matter how unlikely the failure, is not good enough. And since the car is a current model, I can't understand why the parts weren't taken from a warehoused, undelivered vehicle to speed up the repair process. Protecting the brand (and thus the group) should be the primary concern if VAG want VW to be considered a premium brand as their dealers would like to portray.

Winesnob, I think you are far more forgiving than I would be in the same circumstance but then maybe I'm just a vindictive, crotchety old bar$tard.

You'll find that the reason that they don't is because it is cheaper not to. Inventory = cost, hence it is cheaper to have only a big warehouse to cover all parts for SE Asia, and fly the less common parts in as required.

Exhaust Gas warning light. Not related tp DPF. Separate warning lamp devoted to that. Manual says "Exhaust gas quality"

Two similar cases on the diesel forum. One was EGR valve and mine (MK VI Golf TDI - 29000 km) is from the dealer "Air mixture valve". Been waiting a week now for the parts.

Just as a heads up, service manager told me that, although it's not in the service schedules, techs have been advised at training to check EGR valves as they have seen some clogging.
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

I totally understand this. I'm saying that it is ridiculous to economise to this extent given that the same part is used in Skodas and Audis as well as Volkswagens with one of those brands being marketed up against BMW and Mercedes Benz with the others pupported to be premium brands. Part of the differentation from brands like Ford, Holden, Toyota etc should be in the support.

With all the info from owners with electronic/injector failure............. VW sounds like crap. Iam thinking of getting the new model Mondeo TDI with DSG.

Has anybody asked VWA about the problem? Would be good to know a response!

Look at an Accord Euro,I think its the mid size benchmark.

That may change next year with the introduction of the all new Jetta.

The problem is minimised by adding a Provent catch can, ANY car, especially the diesels will be ingesting huge amounts of sludge due to the emission laws these days, and any moving part such as EGR valves and the like will end up getting stuck and burning the controlling motor out. The problem is lessened as you drop compression ratio, and thus oil blowby, so it affects the petrol cars less, but don't kid yourself that there are sludge free engines out there these days. Ford is having far more numerous problems with their diesels currently, and from the conversations I've had are in a far worse situation than VW. Adding a quality oil catch can should be almost manditory to modern vehicles, and considered essential for the diesels.
