AM Radio Reception

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else experiences the following -

During colder months the am radio reception takes a while (up to 20 mins) to kick in. Once it begins, it's fine but find it odd it only occurs in cold weather.

I searched and found posts about poor am recpetion, but nothing like this.

I have a 2007 125kw TDi Passat

nope, the AM reception in both my caddy and passat is poor, particularly in inner city areas, tram lines etc. but always works up front.

AM uses the rear windscreen (or side IIRC if you have the wagon) so it could be the temperature of the window causing the problems, a build up of dew or just the electronic components mounted around the window are failing in the cold.

You could try covering the rear window area with multiple layers of blankets and tarps overnight to see if it makes a difference to work out where the problem is.

This makes sense.The car is always garaged, but still gets cold up in bendigo overnight, so will try the blanket trick to see what happens.

I have a Passat MY10.5 sedan with the RCD 510 radio/media unit. Radio reception was hopeless particularly AM.
The antenna is in the rear window so that is where I headed. I think the antenna is in the side window in wagons.By removing the trim above the rear window you find the junction box where the AM an FM antenna leads plug in. This box is held up against the window by four clips. Removing the box reveals spring contacts which mate up with copper pads on the window. Apart from needing a slight bend to make better contact it is apparent that corrosion between two dissimilar metals gradually causes the problem. After a good clean up reception is now fantastic.
